Please change my order from .457 to .455.

35903

I have just dug these out from the dark depths of my shed and measured them, they are both .451. The one on the left came from an RCBS mould, on the right is a LEM mould. Sadly both these moulds belonged to an old freind whose wife decided that the best place for them after his death was in the local landfill site.

Another wife took all those little things every reloaded has and GAVE them to his shooting bodies. These examples are the best tell-tale signs how much they really loved their husbands.

I just did it. As a matter I was thinking to do what you did on those forums, they are by far two best about British arms. Webley shooters in Canada usually go on one of those.

One smaller problem on CanadianGunNutz is they do not allow hot linking for non-supporting parties. But, would not hurt to do so, hope I did not brake any rule. Some forums insist to send them text for review. Will try to post on some other forums this weekend.

I like to size boolits, despite HB, to make them to fit cylinder and for uniformity in dia. hoping for better accuracy.

For me, I am going to run them through a lubrasizer in order to lube them. If I'm casting .457 bullets, I can be assured of them being .455 since I put them through a .455 sizer die.

It would be interesting to see what everyone is shooting these bullets with. I would imagine mostly Webley Mk VI models. I don't even own a Webley! (Sad, I know) Maybe after delivery this kind of topic can run in the results section.

As far as I know, this Mk. II boolit was used in ammo for later Webley models, Mk. VI in particular. Useful link http://britishmilitariaforums.yuku.com/topic/7857/British-Service-Revolver-cartridge-specs-and-diagrams .

As for dia, if you are not using lubrisizer, I would suggest to go with .455. I opted for .457 so I can size them and make uniform in dia. Although, not big issue in Webley because of the hollow base, but I like to size boolits to fit cylinder.

fred2892
10-07-2011, 06:30 AM
Try measuring your cylinder and then opt for a mould a couple of thou over cylinder size to allow for sizing and lubing. You might be surprised at how small webley cylinders are. Dont forget, the hollow base is there to allow the boolit to expand into the rifling and fit the grooves. It will severely affect accuracy if you go too large as the cylinder will size them down (leaving lead residue in the cylinder) and then when they hit the rifling they will bump up. Better for the lead to fit the cylinder.

deaddog jack.....mine will be used in an old French muzzleloader and be used as a minie bullet. Unfortunately my government stole my webley IV.

In addition, too large boolits will raise the pressure considerably, something you must avoid in any firearm, especially in Webley. They are sturdy firearms, but cannot compare with solid frame revolvers.

Also, see here what happens when Webley is abused shooting 45 ACP ammo, that is actually more than a proof load for this firearm:

3. The pressure of .45 ACP milspec and standard factory loads exceeds the proof load for the Mark VI Webley revolver. (http://britishmilitariaforums.yuku.com/topic/9296/CAUTION--455-REVOLVERS-ALTERED--SHOOT-45-ACP--45-Auto-Rim)

I definitely want in as I just purchased a webley mkvi for my wife and am having a hard time finding ammo (been reloading 45LC so I can reload no problem).

Was there a standard diameter button used on the mk6 when broached? I can't find my cerro-safe to measure bore. If I need to I'll go get a soft ball and smack it in with wooden mallet but am worried that will mess up. Worst come s to worse, I could order 457 and fab a sizing plate from o-1 steel if it doesn't fit.

Thought i would ask you other webley shooters since you're all here now. PM me to keep this forum clear. I will edit this post to provide that information for other on-the-fencers.

Onty, any idea where the picture of the bullet in your first post came from. I am just wondering about its accuracy in dimensions as I believe the .454 diameter on the picture is much too large.

I know the RCBS .455 mould casts at .452 as I have just picked up some more of these that have been sized down to .451.
Also on looking at the drawings for the service Webleys you can see the cylinder throats are .449

37606

Heres the rifling

37607

So you can see that even if you size down a cast boolit from .455 down a couple of thou to.453, then the cylinder throat will further swage down another 4 thou to .449 before it gets anywhere near the rifling. Not only will this smear the boolit (especially the lube grooves) but it will also raise pressures in these old guns.

What spurred me on to look into this was that I have just read an article in 'Target Gun' from august 1995 where the author had ordered a special order mould from RCBS to replicate the 455 webley naval bullet.

37608

In the article he states that the webley he is using has chamber throats of .4495 and that previously he had sized his boolits to .452. However, for this mould he had a .450 sizing die made up by Jim Goodwin as he was unhappy at the .452 boolits overworking the case mouths as they were oversize.
So if .452 boolits were oversize and overworking the case mouths, what on earth are .455 or .457 boolits going to do?

I have a cartridge collector who lives nearby amd I will try and get an original .455 and pull the bullet to get some dimensions if anyone thinks it worthwhile.

This is not written to wind anyone up or piss on anyones fire, merely to confirm what you think you want is actually what you need. Apologies if any offence caused.

Thank you for comment. Drawing is from here http://britishmilitariaforums.yuku.com/topic/7857/British-Service-Revolver-cartridge-specs-and-diagrams . As for RCBS size, I cannot comment it. However, regardless of dimensions of barrel and cylinder bores in literature, those dimensions on military MkVI could be quite bit different. Also, as far as I had seen, original (Canadian made) boolits were made from fairly soft lead, softer than wheel weight. So, I used original data to design boolit here, IMHO this is the safest way to go.

Managed to scrounge an original and pulled the boolit on it.

37612

37613

37614

So boolit diameter was .4495. Powder charge was 3.9 grains of what looked like chopped cordite and the boolit had a hardness of 8.2bhn and weighed 266.7gns.

This is where my drawings and dimensions came from

Just for fun I just took my mk6 and mk4 out of the safe and measured the throat at the front of the cylinder. The mk6 was .450 and the mk4 was almost .451. I just used a caliper but they are obviously smaller than the .454-.455 I was assuming they were. Maybe I might not want a .457 mould.

I received reply from Miha, this one will go some time after New Year. Hi doubled his work-time, but seems to me no mater how hard he is working, we are going to pile more on him.

fred2892

I haven't seen official spec for ammo. Nearest I have is the book 'The Webley Story' by Dowell where the drawing on your first post came from. Unfortunately, the book does not give reference to where the original drawing can be found, nor in the entire chapter on ammo does it give any specifics. Nothing found in Skennertons SAIS either.

Just to be clear, I want this mould for a muzzleloading rifle, not for a Webley. I just dont want folks to suffer the frustrations I went through years ago trying to get them to shoot straight.

I had both a service mkIV and mkVI. Naturally assuming .455 meant just that, I used a lyman mould that threw a boolit at .455 after sizing. Accuracy was terrible and it took twice as long to clean the smeared lead from the chambers as it did the rest of the gun. Other combinations of moulds/sizing gave similar results.

It wasnt until I bought some commercially cast lead boolits to the same design as original that things improved dramatically. They came pre lubed and sized and surprisingly to me at the time measured .451. No more smeared chambers, no more chunks of bullet around the cylinder/barrel gap and a tenfold increase in accuracy. 3 grains of bullseye gave pleasing groups as opposed to shotgun patterns with the larger boolit. A similar situation to .303s I suppose where virtually every publication tells you to use .311 whereas anyone who has actually loaded for accuracy knows you need a minimum of .314 upwards.

I carried on using these in a muzzleloader after the government took away our toys. The supply of these naturally dried up here in the UK which is why I need this mould. It doesnt matter to me that when I size them down to .451 that the grease grooves will be smeared as the whole boolit will be covered in beeswax.

Springfield has measured his chamber throats and came up with a maximum of just shy of .451. Has anyone else measured theirs?

Thank you Fred again. So, looks like that standard rifling (bore) dia is .449-.453. If I remembered correctly, Webley Mk VI I sold some years ago, had rifling bore something like .448-.449. According to some sources, Webley engineers made cylinder chambers smaller than boolit dia in order to swage it and bump pressure a bit. Apparently, powder they used had somewhat slower burning rate than desired, so this method was used to overcome noted problem. Hollow base boolit compensates for any difference in dia between cylinder and barrel.

Considering powders we have today, such swaging might not be required any more. In that respect, I would say that old Keith's rule about boolit sizing just to make it go through cylinder by finger pressure makes sense even on Webley. And your finding that boolit dia on original load is .449-.450 might be further conformation to that whatever was the powder they used, drastic swaging from .455 wasn’t required any more. Now, taking into account that original boolit (8.2 BHN) is softer than WW (12 BHN after two weeks, see http://www.lasc.us/Kelter_Cast_Bullet_Alloys2.pdf ) we mostly use, any excessive swaging will raise pressure considerably.

Thank you Sir!

FYI, I posted http://britishmilitariaforums.yuku.com/topic/13062/master/1/?page=1 and http://forums.gunboards.com/showthread.php?243865-Webley-455-target-shooters-we-need-your-advice asking other shooters about their experience regarding desirable dia for .455 Webley revolver. After reading those posts, I am going to have mine cut to .455. Miha makes excellent moulds, with correct dia. If I want experiment with smaller dia, I can size boolit down for Webley, and if I have a luck, use as cast and lubed in a VERY nice 1917 S&W, with target sights installed (must be done before WW II).

If you want to change yours, please let me know by posting here so I can update the list.

An older shooter told me that the trick is to have boolits rolled in lube before sizing, and to make sure that sizing die is highly polished. Also, if going more than few thousands, he recommends going in two steps. I have small bench press and will size them first .002-.003 in die (modified drill bushing) with very gradual slope, before going through lubrisizer on final dia.

Regards, Onty.

Well, before doing anything, be aware that Webley/Enfield Mk. VI is bit different breed of animal than rest of DA revolvers. To test is revolver OK, cock the hammer in SA mode, hold it, pull the trigger and hold it all the way back and lower the hammer. Do not release trigger. Now, check if cylinder is locked tight. Do this for each chamber. If revolver cylinder is loose in any position, timing is out. (Of course, you can dry fire it, but I hate to do this on any revolver, especially on old Webley.)

Bit more here http://britishmilitariaforums.yuku.com/topic/7155/CYLINDER-PLAY-ON-YOUR-BRITISH-REVOLVER-CHECK-HERE .

If revolvers is in nice condition, I bet you will find that it's OK. I had seen just few big frame Webley revolvers out of timing, and those were in POOR condition, folks just aren't aware how Webley works. FYI, Python uses same cylinder locking system.

Most Webley Cylinder Throats are around .459 or .450 so 451 would be ideal & would be what I would order if available but if you lead is soft enough the .455 shouldnt be a problem or simply buy a sizer and push each projectile through?

Shooternz, Stripes003, welcome.

As for casting dia for Webley Mk 3, I think you should go with .455 dia. Webley have normally about .450 dia chambers (on two I have, they measured about .450 and .451, I had one that measured .449). I listed you Stripes003 for .455, let me know if you want to change dia.

geoffsmiller at comcast dot net

I will try to explain, please correct me if I am wrong. Pins for solid base are for those folks who would like heavier boolits and for higher pressure loads. When hollow base boolit is used with high pressure loads, muzzle pressure is still high enough to deform the base and accuracy goes downhill. With standard Webley pressure loads hollow base is not deformed, and these boolits are usualy quite accurate if revolver is in good shape and loads are right.

THANKS MIHA, looks like our moulds are close to be cut.

bonza
07-15-2012, 09:38 PM
"Also, why extra pins? Is this a part that will wear out with normal careful use?"

To simplify, if I may; the mold is designed to be used with pins that will form the bullet with a hollow base, as per the original .455 Webley bullet. For those purchasers wishing to cast a solid base bullet, optional plain base pins are available. In other words, the extra pins are not spare parts, but offer a bit more versatility in bullet design.

I need to not only find webley brass but I need to find a webley to shoot them from! I just bought a Remington rolling block, so I'll have to put my search on hold for a bit. With my luck I'll find one that's like new but won't have the funds!

When I put my name down for one of these molds I didn't own a .455, now I have three of them! They will be VERY happy when the mold gets here!!
