Hey guys. We went out after work tonight so my best friend could punch his remaining antelope tag. Kirk was shooting his Marlin guide gun in 45/70. The load was a 300 grain Hollowpoint from a MIHEC GB mold. It was BHN 11 alloy, pushed by 22 grains of 2400.
After several stalks, he finally got close enough to get it done. He clobbered a small yearling(mistook it for a larger animal) at 60 yards. The boolit went in behind the shoulder and exited behind the other shoulder. It was a perfectly broadside shot.
The entrance wound showed signs of expansion and was around 2" in diameter. Both lungs were really ripped up. The exit was about 2 1/2". The animal dropped at the shot.
I recorded some video of the stalk and the shot from about 1/4 mile away.
You can't see the antelope get hit or go down, but you can hear the boolit impact, and see the goat laying motionless at the edge of the frame, immediately after the shot.

It doesn't take a Weatherby "ray gun" to kill game, that's got to be about 1200 fps load. I like antelope venison, good Job to your friend.

Hit one wrong with a 45-70 and all you find is 4 feet and a set of antlers. Good shooting to put a bullet somewhere that didn't ruin more meat than you had to.

Didn't ruin any meat at all. I think too many guys fall into the trap that they think they need a 400 grain boolit at 1900 fps to kill anything with a 45/70.
This load is a sedate 1300 fps with a 300 grain cavernous hollowpoint. You can shoot it all day long without feeling like you were in a barfight afterwards.
The fact is, you get a 300 grain boolit moving, and it takes a lot of meat to stop it.

Nice....1300fps with a 300gr will work just fine on antelope.....just watchout for charging p-dogs.

just watchout for charging p-dogs. -dk17hmr

I'm betting he had extra boolits, even the most aggressive p-dog will become passive after no more than two 300 grainers, often just one!:bigsmyl2:

Try a harder boolit, forget the hollow point and make sure the boolit has a large meplat.

That boolit will take your critter and cut down on the damage a bit should the shot not be well placed.

In my very limited experience, I can see no need for a soft or hollow point boolit on game.

A big meplat will do it! AWESOME! game takers.

Keep em coming!
