Hi Guys,
Just got myself a Marlin 30/30 and although I'm not new to reloading, I am new to reloading for rifles. I am going to use plated boolits in the gun and I need to find out what speed do I need to stay under,or do not exceed, with a 170 gr boolit in order to get away with loading these guys up with NO gas check. Thanx in advance for any and all your help. Glenn

Start out at about 1400 and work up, i have gone as high as 1700 with some loads.

I never tried plated boolits but I think you can approach jacketed velocity depending on the thickness of the plating. A lot of companies put a full thickness jacket on their boolits---oops, bullets. If the plating is thinner then that you can still go fast. Since we don't know what bullets you have or how they were made, it is up to you to experiment and tell us all the specifics.
Since most of us shoot cast, it is a hard question to answer until you find someone here that has tried the plated ones.
Are they fully plated like the Speer bullets or are they just thinly plated?

WARNING!!!

Plated bullets are usually noted for having to stay below 1,300 fps velocity as noted by the manufactuer. There is a danger of the plate on the bullet pelling off from too high velocity, this can cause build up in the barrels rifling.

Stay within the manufactuers limit guide lines and you should be OK.

I can tell you guys this much...... I know that these plated bullets must be loaded using cast data. I just don't know how fast I can push em with no gas check. The manufacturer doesn't give that info, and this rifle stuff is all new to me.

Well, I didn't read the instructions and was pushin 1400 out of a 44 Mag. But these were totally encased and needed no GCs. These are great for breakin in barrels.

Fall Run,

You are going to be "the man" on these bullets. Crank em up and see what you get. Then report back and let us know what you found.

I will give you a hint. Just like with cast, velocity ISN"T the problem or limiter, it's pressure. So it depends on what powder you choose to ignite behind those bullets. A faster powder is going to have a lower velocity potential than a slower powder. Just so you know.

My understanding is that the Berry rifle bullets are plated .008 or so, and up to1700 fps is attainable. There are:

30-30 150gr @ .308
7.62x39 110gr @.311
45-70 350gr @ .???
30 carbine 110gr @ .308

Graffs carries them. They're inexpensive.

I tried some Raniers in a .357 SIG. They shot ok below about 900 fps. Any thing over that, they started stripping the coating and accuracy was impossible.
