A while back I got a good deal on an unfired Savage 223 barrel re chambered by Harry Mc Gowen to a 222. I would like to use PB only in this bbl. The problem is it is a 1-9 twist blued steel.

Any suggestions on boolits and loads with this fast twist would sure be appreciated.

Probably for paper targets only as we can not shoot rifles here in Illinois.:violin:

Are Ya ask'n 'bout a particular boolit mould style, or a particular blend of alloy? If'n Ya meen which PB alloy, then I'd say a real tough one fer sure. Rich in tin and a nice balance of antimony, but not so much as to get brittle. If'n Ya meen t' ask 'bout particular boolits, I'm gonna be no hep A-Tall, as I don't know them itty-bitty diameter pills.

i tried some 225415 in lino but they turned into a grey cloud about 20 yards down range so I decided to ask questions instead of just wasting stuff.

Not sure weather to start with a lighter boolit, different powder or lead mix, Decisions decisions decisions.

Gotta love them lil pills. Over 100 of them in one pound of PB. Economy for us seniors.

You need a velocity between 1,800 fps and 1,900 fps with a 1-9" twist. If you want to try faster then I'd do that after I got it shooting at that speed range. Little charge of shotgun powder should do it. If you have a Lyman 49th or 3rd they list Red Dot, 700X, Green Dot and Unique with start charges that will run that speed. About 6.0 grains of Red Dot may work. I'd also try a pistol primer.

With the rifle powders you won’t get as good a gas seal on the case neck.

I’d not think you need straight Lino. 50/50 Lino / WW makes a nice 22 bullet. I use 2:6 alloy with some added tin.

I'm working with NOE .225 70 Gr. RN in my Kimber 84M .223 with 1:9" twist and I have NOE 225407 68 Gr. FN on order. By the way, both of those are currently available in group buys. I would use the slowest powder that will fill the case and provide the velocity I'm looking for. For example, I'm using AA-3100 in my .225 Winchester.

Best of luck,

Tony

Cut that lino in half with WW then size/GC and oven heat treat a few, shoot some HT'ed and some not, keep volisity around 1800

NOE has a copy of the RCBS 22-55 for sale in the vendor sponsors area. I have had really good luck with that one. It fits the throat of the chamber very well. Running 4895 in the 223 gets me the best groups so far.
