I've searched and cannot find the pic where the top of a plastic drink bottle was used as a jig to hold the Lee hardness tester scope. Anybody have that post bookmarked?

Thanks

Guess I overthought mine. Could have been that easy.

Yep. The clear bottle lets a lot of light in. My eyes seem to need a lot of light these days. :)

Thats purdy slick.
And I could have saved the 3.50 I spent on the kids microscope. Dratt-it-all-anyway.

I ended up with a Tasco microscope I bought from a guy for $15.00 and modifying it.

Thanks GS, I didnt solder the 1/2 to 34 adapter so it is able to turn and the 45-70 case is perfect for the LHT to slide up and down without being too loose that it falls through.

I finally got a Lee Hardness Tester a few weeks ago and a couple of days before its arrival I saw the pop bottle trick. Since we don't drink a lot of soft drinks I swiped a V-8 bottle out of the fridge (to lazy to wait until we drank it all) and poured it into another container. It's sturdier that a 2-liter pop bottle and works great. My compliments to who ever thought this idea up.

Great ideas. Not to take away from any excellent fixtures, but mebbe it's the machinist in me that told me to use a magnifying visor and a dial caliper to measure the dents. Works for me...

That's the way I do it, too ...

Boy! I got two or three good ideas from this thread. What a place!

I saw somewhere where a guy took a picture of the dent in the boolit with a 6 mega pixel camera so when he printed it he figured out how many pixels the printer would print per inch and used math to figure out the bhn from his picture..... When I was young I could have figured this out, now I have CRS (cant remember Sh**) I'll leave that to those youngsters with big brains

I made one out of a corner bratkit and a carriage bolt about 4" long with 2 nuts and made a base out of plywood and drill a hole in for the bolt and then put a spacer on the plywood and slid the bolt in and then put the first nut on and then the bratkit faceing like a L with the hole at the far end on the bottom and then the next nut on top and then you can adjust it up or down and slide the glass that comes with the kit that you clip it on the L top and it is fully adjustable and good to go.When i have a chance if soem wants to see any pics I can try and post them

Hi Folks,

The pop bottle microscope holder was a great idea. I just drilled one for myself, and it works gangbusters! If anyone is interested, a 27/64" drill makes a nice tight hole.

Whoever originally posted this idea, thank you.

Take care, Tom

So mdi, as I had guessed (but never tested/confirmed) apparently one is measuring the dimple in thousandths with the Lee Hardness measuring kit?

Brinell charts for the Lee hardness tester are available in English and metric units. Your choice.

I shamefully admit that I hijacked the plastic microscope from my grandson's Doctor kit and tried to adapt it to use with my Lee tester, unsuccessfully . Since he's was only 3 at the time, I don't think he realized that the resulting hole was supposed to be a lens.

I guess I missed this thread in 2011 -- that's why I like to click on "Unread Posts" - you never know what you'll turn up. The soda bottle is so simple, yet so functional!
