Bill, what do you consider long range? I have shot mine out to 600yd and it does as good as I'm capable of shooting. Much depends on what you are looking for and the twist of your barrel.
The long range (1000, 1100, 1200yd) at Camp Atterbury was won last year by a 38-50RH. The catch was that the 38-50RH holds 60gr+ of powder and a 12 twist barrel. Variables make all of the difference in the world. Th original 38-55 was built as a 200 to 300yd gun, with a 250gr boolit and a relatively slow twist barrel.

wgr,

I had a Uberti 1:18 twist 38-55, which shot just great with a 300gr boolit w/43-46 gr Swiss 3F, or 1 1/2F.
GOPHER SLAYER has that rifle now.

Mine is a 15 twist, does really well with the Lyman 335gr and 47gr of 2F Swiss compressed .250. I would think that something in the 300gr or slightly lighter would do outstanding at that distance. I get decent accuracy from the Lee 250gr boolit for hunting same powder and load.

38-55 - 1:18 twist - Ideal 375166, 320gr - 42g FFg ... consistently accurate on the silhouettes out to 500 meters --- even a 40 shot string (no patch or blowing) using the new lot of KIK powder with no degradation of accuracy

I've chronoed mine but don't honestly remember what it was but I would think in the neighborhood of 1300fps. I'll try to remember to check my notes tonight.

I shoot my Winchester (Miroku) 1885 Traditional Hunter out to 350 yards and do pretty well with it.

Our match includes rams at 350 yards with two turkeys thrown in for good measure. From sticks I have not missed a turkey at 350 and rarely miss a ram.
