Short jackets:::

While going through my father's equipment I came across an interesting item... In study i have learned from him that years ago PO Ackley tried casting with a copper or brass cup to protect the lead from melting while enroute out the barrel. I have box of probably a thousand of these cups in 44 cal. Is there still use for them and who might be interested?

whelmag,

Welcome to the forum.

Most of us call those cups "gas checks". Lots of people use them, even me. So many of us are interested in them.

If you're trying to gauge interest in them in order to sell, post them in our For Sale/Swapping forum. Priced right, they'll sell.

Caveat here. Be sure to read the heading in the Buy-Sell -Trade forum before trying to post a sale item.

Welcome aboard.

Those might be half jackets. If they are they are worth a lot more than gas checks.
Are they more than 1/8 inch deep?

they are just over 3/8 of an inch... when I get home I will put my calipers to them and give the exact measurements. I set them inside a fired 44 mag case. They are to large for 38, so I will measure them.

Gas checks are usually more flat than these...

they are short jackets - over 200 that measure .245 and over 500 that measure .249.
I am new and cannot list for sale but am curious if they are useful... after enough posts or whatever i will see if i can list them

Yes, they are useful and quite desirable. They are very hard to obtain and most bullet swagers who swage handgun bullets would be very happy to get his hands on them.

When you determine the diameter, let me know. If I forget this thread send me a private message.

There are 289 of the cups that measure outside @.445 They are .389 tall and inside diameter is .390. The cups that measure outside diameter at .450 are .303 tall and inside measure is .390 and there are 659 of them made by Hornady.
hopefully that gives enough info for those who could use them.
NOTE THE EDIT OF SIZES....

Well, I'm confused.

Maybe instead of brass they are actually made out of the same material as the Tardis. :)

Maybe they're made for one of those British rifles where the lands are really the grooves, and the grooves are really the lands. :kidding:

you start small and swage UP.
i can get to 430 with a boolit that starts out at 379 easily enough, and also apply a 44 gas check to it.
the 245's would do for a 6,5
but if the inside and not the outside measurements are correct then they are for a 44.
if both measurements are correct, then they truly are from the tardis and i'd like just one of them.
however, i don't wanna be exterminated........

If these are half jackets, that is what they sound like, I would go to the Swaging Tab, and post the info there. I bought a lot of gas checks on eBay a few months back and ran it to some really big gas checks, much like you were describing. I was just going to scrap them, but instead sold them overt there. I believe that if you look up DukeinMain, a member here, he may be interested in purchasing them, as he bought mine off of me. Saved me from scrapping them anyhow. Look in my profile, he is listed as a friend. Good luck!

The problem is that the outside can not be smaller than the inside ... Check your measurements again, please.

Can you post a few pictures of both the box and the objects in question?

The measurements i wrote down wrong: it is .424 and .450 and both sizes are .390 inside
