I just purchased a new mould to produce 460-405 gr PB boolits. My question is ,for my Gc boolits my alloy I'm using is 3#ww+1# pb. I like that mix for my hunting boolits because it seems to give good expansion . Can I use this alloy for my PB boolits or do I need to mix something harder. I'm wide open to sugestions.I forgot to mention that I would like to stay in the 1500fps range or there abouts.

Lots of variables there. The individual rifle, the powder, water dropped or not, lube, etc. I usually don't go to 1500fps with plain base boolits, but you likely can, just work up a little at a time and see your results. Most game animals won't be able to tell much difference between 1300 and 1500 fps. with a 405 or heavier boolit.:coffeecom

I bet you could even go to 50-50 and be fine. I use a similar alloy in that velocity range with a very similar bullet. Size to .460 or even .461 and use a good lune. I had good luck with Carnuba Red. I have used Re7, H 322, and 4895 to get those velocities. Leading was minimal, not enough to hurt accuracy for 20 rounds or so. That minor leading doesn't bother me a bit in a hunting load, I don't plan on shooting that many rounds in the field!

I would water drop your bullet for best results. They will be hard enough to shoot well but still have the ability to upset some. They will be many things but brittle will not be one of them. Penetration should be spectacular at a minimum.

Enjoy that mould, I bet your gun is going to really like it. For a milder range load try 24 gr of 2400. I get around 1350 and it is very accurate in my rifle. I may use that load for bear in September.

I use air cooled 50/50 with CRed with the 460420 pb boolit. No leading and great accuracy, even after 50+ rounds. That boolit with 40 grains of 3031 and a tuft of dacron is great in the 3 different guide guns we have used it in. 1500 fps. Very pleasant to shoot.
