How many of you guy's that own a Lyman Great Plains Rifle have shot
Lee real bullets threw it?

I know they are suppose to work with the slower twist barrels. But as
most know the GPR has .008 deep groves, which is some what deep
for bullets.

But I really want to buy a mould if you have had success as I hope.

I put 5 .54 LEE REAL bollits into one hole at .25yrds with my Lyman Great Plains Rifle. Did the same with Round Balls at the same distance. How accurate do you want to get?

Fly,
My hunting buddy used a REAL in his Hawken with a Bill Large barrel (.012 grooves) to take an Elk at 85yds. The "but" though is that he patched the back of the boolit to get a good gas seal. The velocity was something over 1700fps with 130grIIRC of powder.

been a few yrs but i used the short ones(300grs i think) in my .54 great plains lubed with bore butter and backed with 70 to 90grs powder and they were as accurate as roundballs for me. for what it's worth and luck friend, bubba.

Bubba did you use a wad over your powder?

The 320 REAL works great in my GPH. Great = 1.5 MOA @ 100 yds.

nossir, just all the bore-butter i could gob on. that was back in the 70's/80's and i'd never heard of wads for rifles at that time. didn't discover rifle wads til i started tryin' to learn how to feed an old rollin' block.

I have REAL's for a fast reload in my .54 GPR. I can't recall them being as accurate as a patched RB, but I haven't fooled with them much.

Well I still love my patched balls, but I thought I would play with some & see what
I can do.I do like the heavy weight over the ball, but if you can't hit what you shoot
at, then what is the use?

Fly, what caliber GPR do you have? I might have some 54s laying around and I have the light weight 50 mold 250gr I think.

Well Boz I do have a 54cal but I already ordered a Lee mould. The one I ordered was the
380 grain bullet mould & maybe I should have ordered the lighter one, but I'm known
for doing the wrong thing most of the time.

Well you aren't going to go broke ordering a Lee mold, that's for sure. The REALs I have, if I have them, would be the 300gr. I sold my 54 some time ago and gave the mold to my buddy. The only concern I would have with the 380 would be it might be too long for a RB twist, but then again it might be fine. Testing will tell.

Yea thats what some keep saying, that they may be a little long. When the mould
come in I will play with them.I really would like to try that patch trick your buddy
used.

You know thats what fun about this whole black powder thing. Some times
something thats not suppose to work, can be tweaked & work out fine. And
like you say Lee moulds are cheap & it won't kill a fellow if it does not work.

Doesn't the GPR come in a 1/48 twist in the .50? Either weight should shoot well if so. If not it should still shoot good enough to take a deer at 100y if that is what you are wanting it for.

No the older ones were 1-66 & the newer ones 1-60.Now the Great Plains
Hunter is 1-30 & the Trade rifle 1-48.I thought about buying a Hunter barrel
because it fits right on the GPR.But for now I just plan to play with this one.

You know this ole patch & ball will knock down anything I would ever shoot.
It's just fun playing with this stuff.

"...did you use a wad over your powder?"

Fly, If by "wads" you mean cardboard disks (shirt cardboard or writing tablet backing), I've used them to protect the base of my T/C Maxi-Balls & Lee REAL's (.45cal though). They work and are easy to make if you have the right diameter arch punch (You want one a trifle larger than the caliber so you get a good seal.) Google arch punches or go to Amazon.com (I didn't believe it either!) as they have a good selection too. Did the wads improve accuracy? Yes, but not by a huge amount. They work by protecting the base of the [conical] bullet, but I suspect you may already know this.

Well I have never used the card wads just felt ones.I will try those my friend.

Thank you Fly

Fly, I forgot about felt wads. However, if you purchase an arch punch, here's an excellent source for felt: http://www.durofelt.com/products.html
