None that I know of. I used a couple of Turkey fryer thermometers but plastic face would melt off. After two of them, I decided to order one online.

You talking about a lead thermometer?

Check out the group buys. I think they are 23 bucks.

If you're going to get one, why not get one from one of the site sponsors?

Try Bass Pro, Turner's Sporting Goods, or Cabelas if there are any around you.
Or you could also try a BBQ store. I believe the thermometers for the "Big Green Egg" will work.

Swede Nelson (vendor/sponsor here) might still be selling them. Prices were so reasonable I got one just for a backup.

Nope, all that would do is measure the surface temp of your alloy. :)

Using an infrared thermometer on the surface of the lead is too convoluted by the reflection variations; but aiming the "dot" at flack black surface of the outlet pin on a bottom pour unit seems to be consistent. Aim for an area above the surface of the clay granules or whatever cover material is in use. Even this seems to be a bit tricky. BTW, what is the correct term for that rod that lifts to let lead excape from the apeture at the bottom? Is it the "pintle"?

Harbor Freight has had an electronic thermometer with a probe that works well. I've had mine for about five years.
