I missed a buy on a Herter's single cavity bullet mold on ebay yesterday. Info said 357" dia. and " looks like 150 to 158 grains". The pic looked like a SWC, plain base, but had two lube grooves instead of one. I wanted to try the two lube groove style, just for grins. Any body familiar with/use a two lube groove, SWC in 38/357?

I use Ideal 357443 with 3 lube grooves and Ideal 357446 with 2 lube grooves, I fill only the lower two on 443 and crimp in the empty upper groove. Both bullets are really fine for use in 38 Special. 357446 drops heavy @ 165 gr., 443 drops right on @ 158 gr. when I use my soft alloy of 50/50 WW/PB. I really like both.

I believe I am the one that out bid you. I am new to the forum but have been casting for +20 years. I cast for about 8 or 10 diffrent calibers. I recall the old Herters Catalog with fondness, I use to dream over it like other kids use to do over the Sears catalog. Knowing Ideal made the molds for Herters this was a good item to add to the collection. I plan to cast boolits for use in my NRA Reloading Classes. I look forward to learning from the group.

The Lyman 357446 is a plain base bullet with two lube grooves and a crimping grove. It will drop a bullet at approximately 162 grains. It is no longer in production by Lyman but it does come up fairly often on the auction sights such as ebay. Also check the selling sight on this Cast Boolits forum. Check the vendors sight on Cast Boolits. Call up their web sites and see if they are making copies of the 357446. Also check the Group Buy part of Cast Boolits to see if copies of the 357446 are in the making.

I used to love Herter's and the catalog was great fun! :bigsmyl2:
George was funny but many of the products sold were top notch.

I have a 4 cavity 357-446 that was a project mold. I had to get a new screw to lock the sprue plate screw in place, as well as polish the sprue plate, but eventually I got it to the point where it cast good boolits. Unfortunately, though the mold casts pretty well, the bullet doesn't shoot all that great. The 358-477, the 358-429, and the 358-156 all do better in my experience.

Have that mold, and it cast a good blt. even if it is only a sing cav. Agree with 44Man, on Herters. Still using some Herters dies! Old George was a hoot!

zmulch,

I was not the one with a mold to sell. Try the Swappin & Selling site. It has both wanting to sell and wanting to buy sections. Ebay may have it from time to time.

My favorite .357 mold is a Hoch 357-157 nose pour SWC with two lube grooves. This is the most accurate .357 mold that I own.

I have heard a number of times that Lyman had made the Herter's molds. I have only one Herter's but it is not the same as any of the many Lyman or Ideal molds that I have. The sprue plate in particular is much thinner and a different configuration. Lyman may have made some but there is very little about the one I have that suggests Lyman.
Herter's did have an amazing catalog, everything was the best imagainable, in their view. The many books they published were the same. From fishing flies to reloading.

Thanes,
Welcome to the forum.

Herter's contracted with other manufacturers for many of there private labeled products. On some products, they'd change manufacturers from one year to the next, to get better pricing. With that in mind, I offer the following advice.

I had a couple Herters single cavity Iron molds. Both looked like Lyman blocks and they needed Lyman single cavity style handles. I am not sure if Herter's offered Molds that used the same style handles year after year, if they changed at some point?

I'd measure the slots on your mold, then look for the "sticky thread" on mold handles and what fits what. I believe someone included dimensions in that thread.
Good Luck

I'm looking at a 1968 Herter's Catalog right now ... Lyman must have made them fot Herter's ...they use all the same mould numbers , seating punch numbers ...it's the same layout Lyman uses.
Anyhow ...the mould is Lyman 357466 @ 160 grains . A Plain base version of 358156 GC ... I believe these are Ray Thompson designs .
Back then there was no Amazon and local Gunshop didn't carry a big inventory of moulds ...
I mail ordered all my early moulds and handles from Herter's ...they sold them cheaper than the Gunshop did .
As soon as it warms up I'll go look at the Herter's moulds and see what/how / if the markings differ from Lyman .
