Not sure if this belongs here but maybe it can be moved if it doesn't. Just thought I'd show what I shoot my cast boolits at. The first photos are of my temporary backstop for 50 and 75ft range. It's a wood target frame with a trashcan full of dirt behind it. The trashcan stops everything but full bore .357 and .44mag loads and the diamond plate behind the trashcan stops them. I can pick the spent bullets up off the ground under the diamond plate.

This is the portable bullet trap I've been working on. The sled is not completely painted and the I-bolts aren't installed on the front so I can pull it with my mower. The trap uses 6in of water in the bottom to catch the bullets and a piece of industrual belting covers the front(it's not there either) to contain the splashing water and lead fragments and also is used to staple the target onto. I can pull this anyplace in the yard and when I'm done pull it into or behind my garage. By the way, I use water instead of sand because the lead is easier to recover. Wasn't sure it would work but filled the lower part of the trap with water and it worked with my .44 mag.

I don't have any photos of my 100yrd backstop because it is a work in progress. That means the holes are dug for the posts and the railroad ties are laying around ready to stack but there is no dirt to mound up yet.

I am very envious. I have to drive 40 minutes to shoot.

Something that you might want to look into, I've heard that if you fill the trash can with rubber mulch it will stop as good as the dirt. I get most of my lead from an indoor range that has a backstop that uses chunks of rubber, the lead is really clean compared to what is dug from dirt.

The trashcan was just a temporary backstop. I'll be using the water filled bullet trap and the lead comes out of it without any dirt on it at all. I did consider using the rubber mulch before my wife got the bullet trap for me. The main reason I used dirt was I've got 2 acres of it and it was free like the trash can, lumber and diamond plate.

Six inches of sand in containment will stop just about anything. Check out Box O' Truth dot com, I modeled my boolit traps after the concept that started that website, and it works very well. I use OSB sheets instead of sheetrock and a front overlay of asphalt sheathing for a target backer.

Lucky me I guess. I have a cut away hill side about 7' high. No recovering the lead though.
Maybe when the ore is rich enough , I might mine it.

You can find a ton of info on boolit traps here - http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=26627

It is a long read though.
