What do you use ?

typically I use "gunslick" a graphite grease.

I ask this because of a recent thread in general "cast boolits" forum
about the Rem 742, which is known to self-distruct after so many rounds
prematurely. The bolt tends to chatter on the receiver rails as it cycles,
what wears is the softer metal of rails, more on that here:
http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=70491

Anyway, others have mentioned successfully shooting these guns
if they are cleaned regularly and the rails lubed.
one is castboolits member, "Moonie" who gave me permission to re-post his comment

My oldest son has a 742 in 30-06, we shoot the Lee 170gr over XXgr of H4895, cycles the action nicely. We also lube the rails/bolt up with the following:

2 parts synthetic ATF, 1 part synthetic 20-50 weight Motor oil and 1 part STP oil treatment. This lubricates very well and doesn't migrate.

when I asked Moonie for permission, he gave me a great link for home gun lubes:

It is a slight modification of the "Slick Stuff" from here:
http://www.frfrogspad.com/homemade.htm#Oil
I modified it to work better in automatic firearms, more synthetics and thicker oil.
Stuff works great.

I realize those here with many years of experience will have certain lubes for certain types of uses.
What's your Favorite for an application as I have laid out ?

Thanks,
Jon

Extreme Weapons Lube (EWL) from Slip2000.

I took an AR-15/M16 armorers course this spring. The instructor also owned a firm building top level AR15s for miltary groups, law enforcement, and security firms.

He recommended EWL lube for automatics. (He highly shrugged at the idea of any grease type products for AR-15 rifles except the Garand/M14 since they tend to break down with heat and gum up. But these rifles tend to shoot a lot of rounds between maintenance and sometimes are neglected.)

I bought a bottle and it is good stuff. A little goes a long way. He taught us to use the needle precision oilers for it. I now use it for all my guns.

He also highly advocated the use of Kroil, so he cannot be all bad!!

Mobil 5w-30. I use it in all of my autos.

I was always told the 742's wore out becuse the lugs would gaul on the rec. lugs?? If that was the case, then just a good lube every so may shots would work to stop this.

I use moly EP grease on mine; .45, and an SKS. Use it in my pump shotguns and bolt rifles, as well.
