The 2nd annual Big Bore P-dog Shot is planned for the first weekend of August, 5th, 6th, and 7th outside of Rock Springs Wyoming.

This year we are planning on camping out in the desert on my "private" range which is about 20 miles outside of town. The range is set up on BLM land and there is room to shoot about 2000 yards. I havent worked on the camp site yet, but I plan on having a fire pit and the road into the camp should be alright to get a car in, the spot I have in mind should be alright for tent camping also. Camp/the range is very easy to get to, just a couple turns off the interstate and I will put up some signs before the weekend, and a map/directions. I will take a gas grill to camp for cooking.

I havent been out shooting p-dogs much this year so I dont really know how the population is in the area, this is more of a get together have fun weekend instead of serious p-dog shooting. Most of the shooting is done close to the truck, there just isnt a big enough town for me to set up a bench.

Big Bores, cast boolits, and pistols are encouraged for shooting p-dogs, but anyone making the trip can bring and shoot whatever they want.

Anyone interested is more than welcome to come out and join in on the fun, I know several Castboolits members are going to make the trip.

Sounds like a lot of fun. Especially the big bore part. I would love to go after them with my 300WM at longer range.

You suppose my wife would mind spending her B-Day out there? :) Probably not :( It would certainly be worth the drive, just falls on wrong weekend for me.

I look foward to hearing about the results. Would love to be there but don't think I'll be able to get away.

Good shooting, take no prisoners :2gunsfiring_v1:

Wow...Neat.
I am seriously considering this.
I've only shot P-dogs once,
when my daughter was 4 yrs old,
her Mom and step-Dad (Ken) lived in Evanstan Wy. just west of you.
I visited them for a few days,
one day, Ken took me P-dog shooting.
that was before I was into guns very much.
Ken had brought out a Rem 17 and a 223, both were Rem. 700 I think ?
I had brought a 22lr semi-auto pistol (S&W 622)
and 22lr Semi-auto rifle (some kind of cheap Mossberg, clip fed).
after about 20 shots through my rifle, it wouldn't cycle anymore.
so all I had left was the pistol, luckily Ken let me shoot the 17 Rem.
but he only had 100 handloads...what a hoot,
Soon after that I was looking at varmint rifle.

BTW, after we got back to his place, he cleaned my rifle,
it was soooo dirty, he asked when I cleaned it last ?
I couldn't answer him since I had never cleaned it.
It probably had 3 or 4 bricks shot through it,
it always worked when I needed it...til that day :(

Was out today getting the range road in a little better shape. Shot at 1 p-dog with my 1903 just because he was there barking at me. I was seeing lots of p-dogs and gophers on my ride out there.

Directions to the range/camp, which is just east of Rock Springs Wyoming on I-80

If coming from the west take exit 111 (Airport Road), turn south at the stop sign about 300 feet down the road you will come to a T turn left (east) go about 7 miles you will pass a junk yard on your right shortly after passing the yard you will pass mile marker 7 take a right on SweetWater County road 48, from there I will have sign to get to camp. Camp is roughly 15 miles from the interstate.

If you are coming from the East get off at the Superior exit (cant remember the number) take the survice that parallels the south side of the interestate turn before you get to the junk yard on SweetWater County road 48, follow the signs to camp.

Just a note of reminder to anyone who may plan on attending. This will be a dry camp with no firewood available. Bring what water you may need for drinking, cooking or washing. I will be bringing as much firewood as my little flatbed trailer will haul and still have room for our gear. But that in no way guarantees there will be enough to go around if we have a big turn out.

I'm getting excited about this trip!

Good point Dean.

Sun block and bug spray might not be a bad idea.

I am planning on bring a cooler full of ice and bottled water, antelope steaks and a gas grill.

One thing that would be nice if anyone has one and room to bring it is a shade tent.

I just finished splitting the wood I'll be bringing down to the BBPDS. I plan on building 2' racks on the trailer shown behind the wood pile and will load as much of the pile as will fit and not overload the trailer. I hope it will be enough to get us through the weekend. [smilie=l:

Dean and I were talking about dinner menus....

Friday night I think we are going to do antelope steaks, which I have in the freezer from 2010 hunting season, some corn on the cob, and pasta salad.

Saturday we are thinking random Chili....everyone brings a can of chili we throw it in a pot and heat it up....random chili.

If anyone wants to bring anything to put on the table for dinner they are more than welcome to.

I think we have just about everything covered, Dean D is bringin fire wood, Ill have my gas grill and turkey frier for cooking, got a shade tent figured out, Ill pick up some paper plates, and bring a couple cases of water.

I think most of the major stuff is figured out. Not sure what we are lacking but if you can think of something let me know and we can get it.

Doug took some GPS coordinates of the camp and range today. Here they are:

(coordinates inside parenthesis are in degrees, minutes and seconds format)

Camp - N41.52651 (41.31.35N) W108.95969 (108.57.34W)

Range - N41.52045 (41.31.13N) W108.94720 (108.56.49W)

I was able to pull up a map on Google Earth with these coordinates and it sure helped me to visualize where the site is located before heading down there!

Thanks Doug! :drinks:

I'm planning on coming out saturday night and visit for a bit.
I'll bring my 500 BFR if anyone wants to play.
From the coordinates that Dean posted, it looks like it is closer for me to come by way of 430.
Is there cell service?

dk17hmr
08-02-2011, 11:38 PM
There is cell service...hit and miss but I can ussally get texts out there.

They are working on the bridge there that crosses Salt Wells Creek, next road on the left after the bridge is county 48, take that back towards the interstate for awhile, you drop down through the creek bottom up the hill than a sharp 90 towards the east the turn off for camp is right at the next 90 that sends you back north, you can see the BBPDS Camp sign on the right hand side.

i'd use the airport exit from the freeway.
as a matter of fact thats the one i'll be using, the road construction takes forever to get through.
but it keeps the highway patrol off the cut-off road and i can go out and use it to tune the mustang

Dean D.
08-09-2011, 06:02 PM
Dan, I did a quick inspection and clean up around camp before we left and I did not see your GPS laying anywhere obvious. Hopefully Doug can get a chance to look before someone else may find it.

I DID find a nice Bialetti frying pan and a pair of cotton gloves left in our camp that was not ours. I set those on the fire ring with a big rock on top of them to keep the gloves from blowing off. Hopefully Doug can grab them in case someone realizes they are missing.
