Ok, here is the deal. It's called the Subtle-T primer tube filler. Includes the primer flip tray, primer filler body and removeable motor. Price is $49.99 delivered. The unit works with both Large and Small primers. Hornady tubes have a shoulder on the inside that has to be removed. If you send your tubes to the manufacturer, he will modify them for you, free of charge. All he ask is that you cover the shipping charges. Dillon tubes may need to be fitted due to slight variances in tube thickness. This is accomplished with a little 600 grit sand paper. If you have RCBS primer tubes and 0.316 opening is too large/small, he is willing to make a special run for the same price. If you are interested please include your handle, email address and number of units you would like. Money order is prefered but will do PayPal if you cover the 3.5% fee.

BUY IS CLOSED If there are any late comers, Bob said just email him and he will get you taken care of. Just keep in mind that the folk's in the group buy will be taken care of first.

I can't speak for other company's tubes, but Dillon tubes all have the same OUTSIDE diameter. Only the inside diameter changes (small primer tubes have THICKER walls). So, either size will fit in this device.

OK, I was able to speak with Bob today. As I said before he has twenty five on hand and should be shipping them Monday or Tuesday. There are thirty more in que for production. He has to work double shifts through the weekend, so that has set him back a couple of days. For you international guys I called the post office and got the typical U.S. postal service reply of "I don't know". I will be going there tomorrow to try and get a rate quote. Requested payment confirmation when PP sent on 8/4 and followed up with email also requesting confirmation of funds transfer. I have not received acknowledgment. It is a normal business practice to expect a seller to confirm receipt of funds. I'm not beating on anyone, however, it might be a good practice to confirm payments in the future.

HINT:

Carefully OPEN the plastic "vibrators" (we really know what they are)....

Inside, you will find a small electric motor with a rubber thing stuck on the shaft of the motor. It's that rubber thing that makes the motor spin off balance, and is all you need to make the filler work.

Hide the plastic outer part in the trash so that MOMMA doesn't get wind of the pink/purple stuff going on.

Hope that helps you with the vibration thingie.

Simple Hornady Primer Tube modification:

Simply use a razor blade to cut the plastic/nylon petals off just above ( 1/8") the alumiminum tube. See picture below.

Use a file to square the ends off again and rechamfer the tube with a chamfer bit or another drill by hand.

Use a cordless drill and 220-320 grit sandpaper to slowly sand down the aluminum and nylon until it just slips in the filler body with a little pressure, my Dillon & Hornady tubes magic diameter was 0.3115-0.3120.

Hopefully...the designer made sure there was not enough height clearance to allow small primers to flip. I could see this being a problem if the same feed channel is used for large and small primers. I don't have mine yet to check out. I only load small primers so I hope it's not optimized for large primers.

That's it. I'm going to put a thin piece of plastic to decrease the clearance. I'll report back.

I haven't had any flip yet, but I did notice that it looks like it is very close. I was thinking of sanding/filing the Dillon tube end down to reduce the ID chamfer, that should reduce the clearance that he primer has to flip. I haven't noticed any trying to flip prior to being on top of the primer tube. The Hornady tubes that I modified have just the slightest ID chamfer and it seems to help, I haven't had any flip yet.

I made a new tube and this time left a small ID chamfer as suggested by GMT210. Worked fine. The large primers have enough weight to fall straight but it seems the small need a small tapered drop to stay straight. I so need to get a life if all I'm doing on a day off is putzing with this primer thingee.

I nearly threw mine in the trash yesterday. I am using Dillon tubes that do not seem to require any modification. Large pistol primers flip over at about 4 per hundred. Large rifle seems to work ok if you can get the Lee primer tray to flip them right side up. I have not tried small primers yet but am some what underwhelmed at this point.

Those of you who are having problems are because primer tubes aren't modified correctly, and or you aren't holding the unit almost level when vibrating primers into tube. If you all dont make the end of the tube perfectly square and COMPLETELY REMOVE THE CHAMFER it won't work correctly. I tried everything when testing and I can make it work perfectly 99.7 percent of the time. The idea is to have the bottom just fall out from under the primer.

Bobby4075

The reason we went with purple is because we didn't want to associate ourselves with any reloading company, rcbs green, Hornady dark red, dillon blue, Lyman orange ect... Purple was the only color not taken, so purple it was.

You can buy the trays directly from Lee:

http://leeprecision.com/xcart/PRIMER-TRAY.html

$5

Actually that one won't fit without trimming , so I'm assuming that it's the one from the progressive presses

Also if you have seen the video on primer tube modification, the lathe makes the end perfect, and if anyone is still having trouble, send your tubes and I'll turn them on the lathe no problem. Thanks

Bob

I'll send some Dillon tubes. Not having good success with sandpaper. How should I send them and how much shipping money do you need?
Thanks

Do the trays come with covers at $3 a piece?

If so, I would like some

Have all of these been shipped yet? Still haven't received mine. I'm at #5 on the list. Just wondering.

Thanks,

No, I don't think so. Check the Lee web site link I provided. You'll see that the covers are a different item, available at $2.50 additional cost.

Mine came in, and I like it overall, but I think I may need to fix it so it stops trying to flip small primers in the gap between the primer tray cover, and the clear plastic cover on the tool itself. There's just enough gap that the small primers try to jump out, and end up trying to turn over.

Anyone else having the experience?

I would like to know where to purchase one. My Mac is currently NOT letting me watch YouTube.
Can not find a Subtle-T on the web.
Thanks.

NoZombies,

Have you removed the ID chamfer on your filler tubes. You can use a lathe, file or beltsander, removing the ID chamfer removes the clearance that the SM pistol primers are using to backflip. I used a vertical belt sander and it worked just fine.

I used my lathe to remove the chamfer, but the problem isn't there, it's at the transition between the cover on the lee tray, and the cover on the tube filler. There's just enough of a gap between the two parts that the primers have some space to lift up, and flip over.

I haven't tried it with large primers yet, but I suspect that the gap will cause no problem there, as it's not that wide.

I tried mine today and have the same issue. Small primers jump in the gap between the two covers and flip. Going to have to glue a thin piece of plastic over the tray chute.

It will do the job, but think it needs some refinement to be great.

Finally got mine today. Anxious to try it out. I dont know what 'ID chamfer' is, but I guess I'll find out...

Antichrome,

ID chamfer is short for Internal Diameter chamfer, as in the chamfer on the inside of the primer filler tube.

Got mine today. Havn't tried it yet but looking at it I see that there is about 1mm clearance between the body of the primer tray and the body of the primer filler. I may try and sand a bit off the tray part where it slides into the filler to take out some of the gap that is causing problems with flipping primers.

I'm looking at one right now and I don't see how a primer can flip in that gap unless you are holding it at too much of an angle. You have to hold the whole pizm almost straight up maybe just a slight angle towards the mouth of the primer tube. I have never had a problem since I came up with the idea. Neverless, it can be improved and I am going to change the design from here on out to get rid of the gap and there will be no more clear plastic top on it. (I want this thing to be perfect. So any comments or suggestions are perfectly welcome) It will be molded right in to the pizm and there will be 2 slots to watch primers slide down and also be able to get a tooth pick in just in case of a jam-up. When I was prototyping, my only two issues were to have absolutely NO CHAMFER on the primer tube whatsoever and make sure that any burr was sanded off from the lathe and hold the whole thing almost straight with just the slightest lean towards the primer hole. I hope this helps and you all can send me an email anytime with questions to bobby4075@aol.com I work for the power company as a lineman/troubleman here in Denver and we work a ton of overtime, so I don't get to check this website very often, but can check email on my phone very regularly. I want each and every one of you all to be happy with the "purple primer eater". Thanks again for buying them.

30 years as a lineman so i know how busy you can get. If you want a thought though how about buying a pile of primer tubes, modifying them and selling them here as a group buy? You could take orders and see how many you would need to get so you wouldnt be over buying. I have a slug of tubes allready but a guy just cant have to many of them and that way i can keep the ones i have and just use them till my frankfort aresonal filler finally gives up the ghost.

Bob, We sure could use your assistance on the East Coast. Tens of thousands of homes still with no power after Irene trashed the place last weekend.

My unit works fine. There's a short learning curve, and then it works fine.

We sent 50 linemen from Xcel energy out. They left Sunday, unfortunately nobody from the trouble dept. Got to go because our work load here is so heavy. I did go to hurricane Ike about 3 yrs ago. Wish I was heading out your way. We did send some good guys though

I'll check in to a lg qty of primer tubes. I redesigned the block and took the gap out. So new models won't have a gap.

Bobby & Parrot,

I bought two of the primer fillers, and I wanted to tell you that I have a couple thousand of each large and small pistol through both of them without a single flip.

My Hornady and Dillon Filler Tubes were sanded down on a belt sanded to remove ID chamfer and then spun in a cordless drill to hand sand down the OD to fit snuggly.

I wanted to Thank you both for your efforts.

Mark

Just to be clear, I'm not unhappy with the purchase, I just wanted to point out something that I hadn't heard about. I modified my unit to reduce the gap, and it works just fine now.

Glad to hear the future units will remove the gap, hopefully it will alleviate the (apparently not widespread) problem.

Did you take a little off the Lee tray chute to bring the covers closer together? Was going to try that when I have a chance to setup the new bench sander in the workshop.

makes an old lineman happy hes retired. I dont miss those 3 day marathon session in storms one dammed bit. I smile now when the lightnings pounding and dont jump every time the phone rings. Those 3 day paychecks were sure nice though. they bought me lots of guns and toys.
