I have a 24" encore barrel in .280 on the way. (Long story about why .280 is getting nod over my .243) Currently have the 7mm-145 rcbs mold and a 135 gr lbt spitzer. Would be interested in buying a heavier mold if I got pointed in right direction. Current powders on hand include 4895, sr4759, 4227, and 2400.

Any starting points? Need something for practice. Figure if I put 2-300 rounds down range before deer season, I should be ready.

Watching with interest. I also have a 280 in a custom Mauser 98.

I started playing with it this spring. I got good groups @ 50 yards with the RCBS 145 Sil and not so good with the Ly louverin and 7mm soup can. I used 860 surplus. @ 100 yards groups had really opened up. The range has been too wet and my time has gone to other things. I want to slow things down to 1600 rather than +- 2100. 2400 will be my next thing to try. I had hoped good loads from the "06 would transfer to a very similar sized case but it didn't happen yet.

HI,
There are several threads on the 280,7mm/06,7mm Express.
I have started some myself. Do a thread search.
I listed many powders & loads.
Great cartridge, better than a 270.
Better for cast than a 7mm mag.
If you are only plinking or shooting paper most any wt. your barrels twist will stabilize will do.
If you are going to hunt with it, go heavy, and a G.C. will make things easier.
I have been using the 168 gr.gc Lyman bullet. But if I could find a heavier, blunt nose gc bullet I would love to experiment with it.:Fire::Fire:

Thank you BoomBoom, that was what I needed. Looks like I have a lot I can play with. Barrel should be here in 4 to 6 weeks. I have 2K gaschecks on order. As Tom Petty would say, "The waiting is the hardest part".

Ooo I need to do a search for those threads as well. Just last year I started hunting and bought a Remington 700 CDL in .280. It's my first/only rifle and I hope to deer hunt with it. I figure it would be awesome to cast for it (although I'm still acquiring all my casting stuff) and shoot a deer with my own boolit.

I assumed if I don't find a nice GB here, I'd probably end up going with the Lyman 287641. I'm still learning weights and diameters and all of that, but it's a 160 grain. It says it's for "silhouette cartridges" which I'll have to look up as I'm not familiar with that term.

correct me if I am wrong but metalic silhouette are not hunting type boolits
And probably not a good choice
I went to mountain molds and had Dan make me one up for my 280 ai

I have been casting an old Lyman Ideal mold in 120 grains, with gas check. I use it in my Ruger # 1A in 7 X 57. My favorite loas is 14 grains 5744 behind the 120 grain cast GC bullet. At 50 yds I can get ten rounds inside a two inch circle. I know it could be better but can't see so good anymore. Now have an RCBS LAMII to size and lube. Sized to .285.

HI,
ONLY 2,000 GAS CHECKS.
YOU MUST NOT SHOOT MUCH.
I GO THROUGH THAT MANY IN A YEAR.:bigsmyl2:
You can make at least 2 -3 load levels with what I listed in the other threads.
1 thread was titled DARK TERRITORIES IIRC.:Fire::Fire:

I shoot many castboolits in my rifles and always GC them. I get really good results with Reloader 7 and IMR 4198. I used to use SR 4759, but like the way 4198 and 7 meter through my powder measure. In my rifle I use 22 gr of Reloader 7 for good results for 145 gr. I haven't chronographed it. Usually get less than 2" groups. I cast for .243, 7mm, 30 cal and .338, not to mention handgun rounds.

Hey, I am just getting geared up again. I am figuring about a years supply myself. I have a hungry little Hornet to feed also. Used to go through about 1500 7mm checks and a like number of .41 checks in a year. Throw in a couple of bricks of high dollar rimfire ammo, and it added up. I have slowed down a little raising the kids, but they are now getting to the age where papa can start playing again. Heck, they even enjoy coming out to the range with me now and then

HI,
YEAH, and he built it himself if I remember.
What a sweeeeeet group Ben.
I used to shoot that good , but only with jacked bullets at 100 yds.
My rifle did that with several j bullets, but I finally settled on the 145gr, spbt Speer at 3050'/s, matches vel. & ballistics of my 7MM MAG with a 162 gr. spbt out to 500 yds.:Fire::Fire:

Went out Saturday, 168gc Lyman bullet with out a gas check as an experiment.
10 shots in a little less than 2" at 100'.
Good enough for squirrels. :Fire::Fire:
