View Full Version : First ever booliter paper patch summer invitational.....

.....or something like that.

I am stuck at home for the time being due to an injury. Some one on another forum suggested a patched bullet match so I figured why not.

CommonwealthVERSUSYanks

Rules are simple....

2 class- Iron sight and any sight

Iron sight course of fire consists of 5 shots each standing (50yds), sitting (50yds) and prone (100yds).

Any sight course of fire consists of 5 shots each standing (100yds), sitting (100yds) and prone(200yds).

Groups should be five consecutive shots. Each position does not have been shot on the same day though. No time limits, some people don't have the tools for accurate timing. Though, if it takes you more than an hour to fire 5 shots you are probably not following the spirit of the rules.

Any caliber for either class, (cartridge or front stuffer).

Bullets must be patched and composed entirely of lead other wise.

Slings are allowed.

Bipods, benches, trees, rocks, small children or shutzenwagons are not.....

Iron sights means open style or peep style sights.

Any sight means what ever you want, mount the hubble telescope on your rolling block if you want.

If you have questions about a specific sight just ask.

Please submit data listing your shootin iron and load for each entry.

This postal match is designed with rifles in mind but you can use pistols too if you desire.

For simplicity sake scores will be based on group size. Lets do this the cheap way. If possible, take a photo showing the two furthest distant holes of the group along with a measuring device. 12" scale should work well for most, yard stick will work if you had too much coffee that morning, caliper if you think you are that good. Best group in each shooting position wins. Each position is worth 5 team points. Team with the most points wins.

When people start getting their entries ready I will start a new thread for entries only in each class. Each shooter will make one post in the thread for their results. They can update this post with new results if they shoot a better group.

Deadline is 31 July 2011.

No prize yet for the winner....that may change though....

I think it only fair you be restricted in number of attempts. 5 hits in 50 would work for me.

Maybe a team challenge, Commonwealth versus the Yanks?:drinks:

I was downstate on vacation all last week. Today was my first day back at the office, but then they shut the power down for a couple of hours this afternoon while putting in some new transformers. To make good use of the downtime I ran out to the local gravel pit to ventilate some targets.

I'm hoping that getting some results posted will increase the interest. I tried to provide you with some easily beatable ones in order to avoid scaring off potential participants. ;)

I've got 40 more rounds on the shelf and can head to a proper range before the end of the month in the event the competition heats up. I'm thinking about how to work up a sling for the rifle as well. It would have helped a lot on the prone target.

Had a great day at the Range today.
May have to have another go at it.:groner:[smilie=b:

Evidence that things are working out well with new brass and weighed charges etc etc.

To my credit it was gusting everywhere 20-30 knots. But I shouldn't of been that bad!!!

Hope the pics go in this thing.

First off easy peasy 100yrd sitting.

 338mm from widest holes centre to centre

Next 100yrd Standing ? rocking wildy.

Centre to centre 192mm which is strange 'cos I thought the sitting was good.

Lastly 200yrd prone.

Felt real good with this. Oops 760mm roughly as the last bullet was off the target and in the stand.

Does anyone really want to copy my load????

Rifle 30-30 H&R 172 Lee half wrapped with 30 grns 2208. 1.5-5x scope.

Got something worked out for tomorrow or Sunday.
Hoping things shall improve some what.
Weather will still be gusting everywhere thou. :( But I could do better.)

[smilie=w:[smilie=w: Looks like I'm winning at least !!!!!!!

For now anyway

Ps black dots were sighting in plain cast a couple at a time at 100yrds. high one first PP shot 5"high sems likeit was at least 10"high at that range???? Awhhh well.

I got out to the range today, and I think I found a good PP recipe. I had just reloaded my brass and was about to shoot some groups that I could post here, and the range officer closed it down! We were supposed to have another 15 minutes, and he closed it. Oh well, next weekend I suppose.
I have a question, I dont think they will allow me to shoot prone at the shooting range. If I cant get a place to shoot my 100yard group, could we bend the rules and let me shoot sitting? It is not as supported a position, so I thought it might not matter, but if it does, I may have to forgo this one.

I didn't get to go out yesterday with my lead soldiers! It was a perfect day too, with no wind and no rain (winter rain is OK as it stops for fair periods but is always accompanied by wind. Well, if it's raining and windy this coming weekend I'll get to show what the pig pun was meant for!:drinks: I'm not so sure about 200yds though?[smilie=1:

I've loaded up some PP rounds for my mint bore. I've never had success with this rifle with PP - it was early days and I switched to the pig gun after a break. So, It's a new load with no way of telling what will happen on the range. I'll get some large targets so I can post the results anyway. It should be fun.[smilie=p:

Todays results were a bit of a dissappointment! The Pig Gun shot like pooh. (I'm wondering if barrel harmonics is at play - the thing sings like a tuning fork!)

On the upside, my mint bore 1902 sporter performed very well at 100m with the first loads put together for it. I ran out of time to complete the shoot.

This was sitting in the mud. A glimmer of hope!

As promised, I got my shooting done this morning at my local long range. Great weather, very overcast, slight breeze from right quarter, a balmy 85 degrees.

I "chickened out" on the .270 project, I get a flyer about every other five-shot group, and I literally can't hit a gallon paint can at 50 yards offhand even using a sling, so I wasn't about to embarrass myself trying to shoot at 100!

Soooo, I've been playing with something else the last two weeks: I wasn't quite awake yet when I wrote "1873" on the targets, it's an 1874 reproduction Shiloh Sharps, 45/90 WCF with the 34" octagonal barrel. Sights are factory tang with .060" aperture, circle front sight insert. I would have liked a smaller rear, but I have a ton of "floaters" in my dominant eye and today just couldn't see through the holes of the smaller ones. Thinking it was kind of silly to shoot this platform at the closer ranges, I opted for the longer class to keep things fair.

The load: Starline brass, 2.400" trim length, sized in Lyman die to .478" neck OD 1/8" from case mouth.
Lyman 457132 535-grain Postell, 30:1 shower pan lead/bar tin, rolled on a case lube pad and sized .453" in a honed Lee push-through, two wraps of .0028" wet lined notebook paper, folded base, sized .459" in base-first sizer, light coat of Felix Lube.
Seated to 3.014" overall cartridge length, crimped mouth to .480", .001" neck tension on boolit (loaded neck diameter.479" 1/8" from case mouth).
38 grains Alliant Reloder 7, 1/2-grain of Dacron filler.
Federal 210 large rifle primers.
These final-seat upon chambering, heavy thumb pressure to push the case home getting consistent engraving pressure and seating depth, boolit pushes back in the case about a rim thickness, but will extract consistently and not de-bullet.

[edit] Just realized the numbers aren't in the pic from sitting position, and everyone is posting to the hundredths, so here are the scores:
Standing, 100 yards: 9.68"
Sitting, 100 yards: 3.11"
Prone, 200 yards: 3.49"

http://castboolits.gunloads.com/imagehosting/thum_89094e2b37df9f01b.jpg (http://castboolits.gunloads.com/vbimghost.php?do=displayimg&imgid=1549)http://castboolits.gunloads.com/imagehosting/thum_89094e2b37f8824b2.jpg (http://castboolits.gunloads.com/vbimghost.php?do=displayimg&imgid=1550)http://castboolits.gunloads.com/imagehosting/thum_89094e2b381598c9c.jpg (http://castboolits.gunloads.com/vbimghost.php?do=displayimg&imgid=1551)http://castboolits.gunloads.com/imagehosting/thum_89094e2b382c360a3.jpg (http://castboolits.gunloads.com/vbimghost.php?do=displayimg&imgid=1552)

As you can see, the standing offhand kicked my ****, the only way I could hold with any consistency was to "sweep" the target and try to time it, but I'm not much of a rifleman. The whole group shot low either due to leaning into it too much or dropping the muzzle through the weave. Sitting was with my support arm elbow braced on one knee, much better. This load will shoot into 1-1/2" all day long from a good rest, so the fliers are entirely my fault, a second attempt was slightly worse so I kept the first group. 200-yard prone with a sight adjustment was a comparative cinch, this gun is rock steady with both elbows planted in folded towels on the rocks. This range is an old rock quarry, and the ground is nothing but sharp scree like road base so I had to have some padding.

After the "money" targets were shot, I set up at the bench and, with the help of the range spotter, proceded to blast the 300 and 400 yard auto-reset silhouettes. Got my tang aperture elevations dialed in and markings recorded, and had so much fun I forgot to save one of the pretty, shiny, loaded nickel cases for the pic, so I used my COAL dummy instead!

After 40 rounds, me shoulder she be SORE!

Finally got some ammunition loaded up for ovendoctor's 32-40. Load is 8.0gr of Trail Boss under a patched 100gr FN. Capped with a large pistol primer.

First target is 50yds standing. In his defense the high flyer was capped with a large rifle primer, hotter spark means higher velocity. This was suppose to be used as a fouling shot.

Barrabruce, it sure made me happy!

How about some details on the work you're doing to your H&R?

This Shiloh is one sweet-shooting rifle, and it fits me so well in the prone position I can almost group as well as it will from the bench. The nearly one-stone weight, 34" heavy barrel, and 12-ounce double set trigger make up for a lot of "lack" in my shooting skills, that's why I didn't do the match with my .270, I literally couldn't hit the 18"x2' target backer five out of five at 100 with it standing OR sitting, but now it's grouping under 2" from bags with a powder change to H4350.

I got extraordinarily lucky with this load, too, my first attempt at PP for this gun, using lined notebook paper was just a guess based upon what I've picked up here about velocity/strength of paper, the sizing was also based upon what others had done, plus I used the only push-through sizer I had that was near the right size for the bare boolits, and .0015" over groove for the final. I have no idea what the groove dimension is for this gun, but what I did worked right from the first test group and has continued to work through nearly a hundred rounds with no cleaning, so I'm not asking questions now!

OMG me Handi. what a mess this is-was.
Poor barrell which was probably lying around after a replacement was sent..fitted poorly to a different action and then sold to the sucker ...me from a place down Sth.

I had to shim my barrel contact area when I first got it.
Worked good for the first 1000 rds cast and PP

Figured I'd try some "acetone" in me Ed's Red for when I use the .410 barrell.

Well the acetone I think seemed to disolve the fixer used on my scope base and the stuff holding the shim.
It shot pretty bad and althou the shimm looked good I started balming everything else.
I flicked the shim with me thumb nail and it sprung out...ooops.
Re done it but it must be different stuff 'cos the colours not the same.

Some medium to full rnds ought to tell if this stuff is up to the mark,
If not I'll have to buy some ne feller guages and do it again.

Threw the bit of cleaner out and made some new stuff.

Moral of story.....I'm getting too...old to remember everything..when some thing works don't change a thing.

Don't buy a gun sight unseen!!!!!!

I doubt if I can get to shoot it before the time runs out.

Best have got so far is around 1moa at 100 which the errors blow out to about 3moa at 300 ....on a good day.
Averages about 1.5 moa to 2 with have decent stuff.

So I have a New gun to break in again. I doubt it'll shoot the same with the vibrational difference.

Okay, so here is my postal match range story. This happened thursday and I had knee surgery yesterday so the details are still a bit fuzzy.

I went to the range with my CZ-500 in 375 H&H, this rifle is sporting a Leupold 1.5-5x in warne rings. I intended to grab a box of light plinking loads with a 290gr cast round nose PP over 20.0gr of blue dot. What I end up with was the lyman 375449 PP over a stiff charge of 4198.

Here is 100yds standing.

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b77/redneckdan/IMG_3510.jpg

Not to bad, recoil was starting to get the best of me. Call it about 7.75"

Here is 100yds sitting.

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b77/redneckdan/IMG_3511.jpg

Had her slung up pretty tight. Shot a decent group but between the recoil and muzzle blast I was starting to get pretty nausea....stupid pain medication....:violin: Call this one 5.25"

Here is 200yds prone. This one I am ashamed of. Just couldn't get comfortable. Everything I tried was hurting my knee.

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b77/redneckdan/IMG_3513.jpg

Call this 16.75

So I go to pack my stuff up. I only brought the 15 rounds for the postal match. Usually I have a sidearm along and had packed up my 4 5/8 bisley that ended up being left behind. Chalk it up to the tramadol.

Anyway I get my rifle case opened and start to but the H&H away when something starts rustling over in the bushes. Out pops an Emu....I kid you not. Mr Emu turns, spies me, head drops /wings come up and he charges from about 75 yds. Up comes the H&H, safety off, breathe, hold cross hairs COM and squeeze the trigger......resulting in the loudest *CLICK* i have ever heard. I am sure they must have heard it in town. I remembered that I had no long arm ammo so my right hand drops to where my flat top should be.......and I find that it was forgotten at home. I was reduced to climbing up on my truck and screaming like a girl, pretty amazing how quick I got up there with the bad knee and all. After about 10 minutes the rancher comes over and gets his damn bird under control. He said he had a couple get loose, this is the first he found and to be on the look out for another one. He thanks me for not shooting his bird.....I didn't bother to tell him the only reason the bird is alive is because I had no ammunition left. :veryconfu

That's funny right there, I don't care who you are!!! I got crossways with a Ria once, walking across a friend's ranch to set up "shop" for coyote hunting that evening I apparently got to close to where one had an egg. Damn thing chased me down in about .000023 seconds, and the only thing that saved me was when I grabbed a large stick to whack it across the head, it bit the stick and wouldn't let go, and the stick was big enough that it couldn't balance to kick me, so it bought me enough time that I was able to get across a high fence with everything except my dignity. If someone had cought it on film I'd be a $100,000 richer!

At least you got one more good use out of that knee before they rebuilt it.

50 yards Sitting: pulled the last shot down. Sorry guys. 4.190 inches

100 yards sitting (as per allowance) 5.45 inches (again, pulled one down)

Funny story, I knew I was forgetting something and when I got to the range I realized that I had forgotten to bring my greenbar printer paper to wrap the boolits in. Not being one to let such things stop me, I cut up one of the range supplied targets that I was shooting at, and made my boolit jackets with that. I was laughing the entire time at the irony, next time, I'll take my lead pot along and get my boolits from the range also. (now if I can only find a way to get them to supply powder and primer.)

O.K.
Took me newly fixed gun to range.
Was a working bee week-end. Everyone but me turned up yesterday and couldn't be bothered to do it all again today.

I fixed a few target frames and took ho,me a bin full of mess.

First a few sighter - inners with plain cast at 50 then out to 100 yrds to get it zero-ed.

3x shots at 100 yrds then the wind picked up- but when I walked up I found this.

The wind picked up gusting from 5-7 and 10-2 all at the same time of about 15knots or more.
:???: According to the bullistic tables it now shoots like a laser if I take out a slight error in miss judgment.:roll: Or maybe I fluked the 3 kissing.

Next 3 pp to get to know where it sort of hits then out to 200yrds

Well I hit paper anyway!!!
4 3/4"

I fired 7 rounds over my bag of junk I carry .
Off the bench sitting with no other suport
So it may be cheating and be disqualified.
2 rnds opened the action.
One just opened it and the other popped open so I discounted those 2 very wild flyers hence the 7 shots. 2x you can't see real wide!!!
If I shut the action hard enough it don't happen.
It may need re-breaking in a bit.

Hopefully it will stay this good for further analysis.
I may move into 150 grns to see If I can get them to shoot.

Barra.
That's about as good as I get with this loads.
Looks to me like the southern cross for some reason.

What in the hell are you doing with a Emu in the land of flags and anthems???

You are supposed to lay on your back and put your feet up in the air!!
Wave them around a bit and they'll come over being inquisitive critters like ...and ....then "dong 'em"

Some people try farming them here. Kind of an odd place considering we get about 300" of snow a year.

I'll keep that in mind for the next time I run into am Emu with out ammo. [smilie=s:
