I've read the Martin and Fryxel articles which are the two benchmark references most often mentioned as I've searched the internet for information for this caliber. I'm interested in hearing from any of you that cast for and shoot the Herters 401. I've shot up the box of original Herters ammo I had with groups more like a pattern. I cleaned up the brass and loaded up some 60's vintage 180gr .401 swaged bullets given to me with bullseye (5-6.5gr) and W296 (19gr) with much better results and little if any leading. I want to cast my own, so I ordered the RCBS 180gr Cowboy mould to try out. Any other suggestions as to bullets, powders, loads, etc? The barrel is .403 and all cylinders are .405-.406. thanks

I heard several times that you can shorten and re form 30/30 brass and make brass for the old 401's. Those guns always just intrigued me for some reason. Pm Justingrosch, I think he may have some suggestions.
