How big is this lead pot?

I already have the LEE pot, and it is way too small.

Thanks johnch

For the info

I usually cast out of a cast iron skillet, on a coleman propane stove.

but am looking for something to smelt the mystery metal with, as I use a aluminum pot now.

I smelted and dipper cast for years from a 2.5 quart stainless steel sauce pan. Got mine at a yard sale as well for a price low enough it is long forgotten. If you want to buy right now, try your local Goodwill or thrift store. If neither of them pan out, Wal Mart will certainly have a 2-2.5 quart stainless pot for less than $15 plus delivery.

BTW, my heat source was a Coleman stove (yard sale, $5).

ETA: Aluminum pots are dangerous. You should cease use immediately.

Question though

Will the Stainless hold up? I guess I am a cheapskate, but would rather buy something that would last a while.

Cast iron would last 4ever I guess, but now to find one.

Thanks

I've been using mine for more than 10 years and I expect that it'll still be viable when I'm dust.

FWIW, I had a cheap cast iron pot before the current unit that (after much use) developed a hairline crack while full of lead. Made quite a mess of my Coleman before the melt cooled down. What a PITA that was. No idea how the crack developed. I had been smelting cable sheath for most of a day when in the middle of a melt, it starts dribbling lead.

Azcoyhunter QUIT USING THE AULUMINUM POT to melt led in it is DANGEROUS to do you can go to your local good will store and get a stanless steel pot to melt your led in much safer I have been using the same stanless steel pot now for over 20 years now :castmine:44Woody

I use a 10 quart cast pot from a lawn sale for $15. I melt on a beat up Garland restaurant stove.

Okay, so I was looking at the link to Buffalo Arms Lead pots. I already have a 10 pound pot, should I get the 20 pound or go all out and get a 50 pound pot?

Right now I cast 30 caliber, 44 and 45.

I just don't want to get the 30 aned say, dog gone it, should have gone for the 50 or get the 50 and be thinking that the 20 would have been better.

Thanks,

Ron

Will you be casting or smelting? Twenty pounds is a good size for casting, if you want to smelt, you will want/need a different and larger pot. How much do your .45 boolits weigh? If you are casting boolits weighing 500 grains +, you can go through 20 pounds pretty quick.

Lead weighs about 23 pound per quart. You can find cast iron cookware for reasonable prices if you look long enough. Also, if there is a good plumbing supply store nearby, check for a plumbers pot.

Wills,

Thanks for the reply. I have a 10 guart dutch oven that I use for smelting, so the 20 or the 50 pound pot would be strictly for casting. From what you were saying the 20 pound pot sounds like the way to go.

Thanks,

Ron
