I was thinking this evening (which can be dangerous) and pondered the following:

What is the maximum amount of sizing that can be performed on a bullet at one time?

I prefer to purchase multi-purpose products where practical and am considering trying to buy a mold that I can use in an MMP sabot in my 50 cal muzzleloader, and that I could also utilize in a 45-70 (Guide Gun) and 454 (SRH) in the future when I purchase them. It is my understanding the 45-70 will need to be sized to somewhere in the neighborhood of .458" and the 454 to around .452".

1-Is this feasible?
2-Can boolits large enough for a 45-70 be sized small enough for a 454?
3-In order to drop bullets suitable for the 45-70, the boolit will need to drop around .460", correct? This means that I will need to size down to at least .457" or .458" to fit in the largest MMP 50 cal sabot, I obviously will not need to lube the boolit since it will be in a sabot, but is it OK to size the boolits without lubing? Will I risk boolits sticking in the sizer or cause excessive wear to my sizer?

Please pardon the questions, but I am new to this and always curious.

Thank you for any help, as always, it is greatly appreciated.

Well, I use the NOE Grease Grooved redo of the RanchDog 457350 GC in both 45-70s (one of which is a marlin guide gun) and in my 454 SRH.

Works great, But I size to 454.5 to fit the oversize throats in the SRH.

Can't help you about that sabot.

I have sized from .460 down to .451 in steps but you will have to use a lube or the boolit will stick in a sizer, ask me how I know that. I first used a Lyman sizer and went to .457 with lube then sized down to .454 with a Lee push through then again went to a .451. I used a cheep version of Emmerts lube and it could be wiped off the boolits easy enough if you need to. They shot OK in a fast twist muzzleloader out to 100 yards 2 to 2.5 inch groups with peep sights.
