I've bought 1/2" fiber filler wads in 45 cal from Circle Fly then lubed and split them for use in my 44s. worked great. Now circle Fly sells a 3/8" thick pre-lubed wad ready for splitting. I bought a bag but haven't tried them yet but they oughta be fine.

+1 - On the circle fly wads. They take up alot of space and you can seat the ball over target loads.

No, you don't have to use lube. I still do because it keeps the fouling soft.

You can use leather, paper, cork, old hat wool felt or store bought felt which is my choice material. It leaves the barrel in great shape and makes them easy to shoot the next round.

Duro-Felt makes an 1/8" hard felt material for BP shooters. I just got a large piece of it for $12. I haven't tried it yet but don't see any reason why it won't work. Planning on soaking it in melted lube and then punching out round wads for both my revolvers and rifles. IH

I Haines,
I'd punch out the wads first THEN lube them. It is less messy and you'll lose less lube.

Cut muy own from old felt hats and dip them in beeswax. You can get awad cutter from Upper Missouri and in a drill press you can make a ton of wads from an old hat in a real hurry.
