A few months shy of 50 years old. Written on the box "Purchased at Buffalo gun center Sept 21, 1961 $7". I was just a little tike. I can't wait to try them out.

Depending on how they were stored they should fire. I just wouldn`t load them in rounds that I would have to rely on.Robert

I have some of those, and had some Federal LP primers that were over 50 years old. Nary a bobble with any of them.

Just used some in a similar box, LR, 20 of 'em in .30-06 , all went bang in a Garand. These had obvious water damage on box but have been dry for years now. I don't know if I'd dry primers in the oven, but they put the compound in wet to start with. Looks like a dry primer is usually a good primer. So what was the 2011 dollar value ?

Free, along with some old powder, and brass.

High end shooter, someone gave it to him. He gave it to me, nice.

They'll do fine if they have been stored under any reasonable conditions.

I've shot both .45 and .30/30 that I loaded and primed back in the 60s with CCIs with no missfires at all./beagle

I think these CCI are from the mid 50's.

Check out the price.

The good ol' days. Back when things used to be the way they should have stayed. When the air was clean and sex was dirty......

I am still using some 1964 CCI SR primers and recently tested them against some fresh primers. The older ones did better!

I just finished using up 2000 Herters SR primers from the 60's, not one misfire. They were stored in the garage for a long time as well.
This stuff seems to be very forgiving. The neat thing was that they served as a nice bridge over the primer shortage.

$7 in 1961 is $52.65 in 2011 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Those were expensive primers.

Anyone know how old these Winchester primers might be? The tray is made of wood.

The Western primers have a production code for 1941, the Peters are from 1943.

The Westerns, by the way, are domed primers. Back then, you not only had to have seater stems for small and large, but for flat or domed in each size as well.

Those must be some of the first primers from Cascade Cartridges. The thing about primers is that even if they were stored at humidity levels that ALMOST turned the primer compound into paste, when they dry out they will be fine. I would be concerned if they were stored in excessive heat. Regardless they will not be as accurate as those primers made with the modern Soviet formula.

But only when done correctly.

I just got a box each of Herter's large pistol and large rifle primers today. Tried one of each in empty 30-30 case. Loud bang and good flash at muzzle. Have no worries in using them. Will save the boxes.

Back in the early 60s primers cost 90 cents a hundred. Less if you bought a thousand.

I bought a few 1,000 of Herters Mag LR primers in 1974---$5.99/M I had just purchased a new Ruger Superblackhawk and it was the first time I needed Lg Pistol primers...those were the days...no HazMat Fees..cheap shipping...

I was buying Federal pistol primers though a friend who was a commercial reloader in the mid 70's, his price to me was $5./thousand! 231 powder in 12 lb. kegs was $30. At the time Winchester was trying to break into the target reloading market and undercutting Hercules Bullseye by $1/lb.

I have some CCI large pistol magnum primers from about 35 years ago and lacking new ones, I tried about ten of them in the 44 Mag to see if they'd even work and sure enough all went bang. Stored properly, powder and primers can last many years...in my case, at least 35 years.
