View Full Version : Mihec Hollow Point (Cramer) Brass 4-Cavity H&G #68 .45
HenryC460
05-22-2011, 05:08 PM
We are starting an Active Buy for a Cramer-type brass 4-cavity plain base mould that casts in the popular Hensley & Gibbs #68 profile.
http://www.mp-molds.com/images/hg68_pb.jpg
By reversing the pins, the mould will cast either 200 grain solid nose or 185 grain hollowpoint boolits. You can order yours in 0.452" or 0.454" (nominal). They will cast half a thousandth to a thousandth larger than that when fed straight wheelweight.
Here is some information on Cramer-type moulds for those of you who are interested:
http://www.youtube.com/v/sMXtwOqc1NY?fs=1&hl=en_US
And here's the mould maker's site, where you can learn a lot about the sort of work he does:
www.mp-molds.com
If you want on the list, either post your "masked" email address (e. g. homer underscore simpson at springfieldelectric dot com, what diameter you'd like, and whether you'd like that with Mihec's excellent handles (the mould also works with Lee 6-cavity handles).
This group buy is for a brass, 4-cavity, plain base, Cramer-type H&G #68 mould that casts either 0.452" or 0.454" boolits (your choice). Moulds are $120 plus $20 shipping.
The following paragraph no longer applies:
Choice of pin type (round or pentagonal) will depend on interest level. Fifteen orders gets us round pins. Somewhat more than 15 orders for pentagonal pins will be required to make that happen. Five-sided pins are an extra $16.
The moulds have been built, and prototype pentagonal pins have proven non-feasible given the long, small nose of the H&G #68.
This mould comes with round pins to cast a round hollow point and blank pins to cast a solid nose.
The moulds accept Lee 6-cavity handles, and Miha also makes super nice handles for $23 plus $7 shipping.
Here is the list. Please specify your diameter (0.452 or 0.454).

That is the official price. Miha wrote me in a PM:
Price for cramer would be 120 $ plus 20$ shipping (plus 16$ for extra 5 sided pins) for 4 cavity brass.
What diameter would you like? Just round pins or both kinds? Would you like handles with that?

I have requested a change of title.
Someone suggested to me that "Hollow Point" is more eyecatching than "Cramer-Type", so the new title should read "Hollow point (Cramer)" (should eliminate some confusion with the other buy as well).
I have also removed the descriptor "200 grains" from the thread title. This mould will cast a hollow point version of the 200 grain H&G #68, but (because air is lighter than lead) the hollow point removes about 15 grains of weight. The hollow point boolits you actually get from this mould will actually weigh about 185 grains.

You are #15 on the list.
That means we have reached the threshold to have these moulds made (15).
We have:
Fifiteen orders for moulds.
Fourteen orders saying round pins at least (I've got to get one buyer's email, diameter, and pin preferences yet).
Nine orders that would at least like pentagonal pins.
I am not sure how many buyers would consider round pins only a deal breaker. We need somewhat more than 15 orders for the pentagonal pins if any pentagonal pins are going to be made, and I'd say we're only near halfway to somewhat-more-than-15 on those pentagonals right now.

Hmmm, this looks interesting but I am already on the regular HG #68 group buy, any particular reason for hollow pointing this bullet?
I'll do my best...
There's terminal performance. A hollow point boolit might more quickly dispatch whatever you dispatch with it due to the bigger wound channel. It might tend to stay in the target instead of overpenetrating and hitting what's beyond it.
The hollow point boolit is going to have the same proven H&G #68 exterior profile as the solid nose, but it's 15 grains lighter. Everything else being constant, it flies a little faster, and at pistol shooting distances, that means flatter shooting, less drop to correct for.
The hollow points use 7.5% less lead per boolit. Shoot 14, and get one free!
The recoil and pressure characteristics for the 185 grain hollow point will be a little different than for a 200 grain solid nose. Since you can make both with the same mould, you get a couple of new tuning parameters for working up a load. It might make a finicky pistol easier to feed.
For a semiauto shooting semiwadcutters, pressure near the maximum is not generally an issue, but the same boolit, same cartridge is used in moon clipped revolvers. Someone with a 625 might want want to load something zippier (or save wear and tear by backing off on boolit weight and psi).
Then there's aesthetics. Hollow points look good. A box or a magazine or a cylinder full of hollowpoints has this high-quality, store bought, expensive character. Maybe it usefully distracts competitors at shooting matches. I don't know. In any case, if you have the mould, they're as cheap as their solid nose cousins, and if you have this mould, you can cast them hollow or solid.
Then there's professional considerations. If someone sells the boolits they cast, they might want to dress up their product line by saying "now available in hollow point." It might be a big seller, or it might keep a customer in "the store" a while longer, resulting in other sales. Why does the customer want this particular boolit in hollow point??? Probably for a few reasons more than I can think of.

Thanks for the detailed explanation HenryC460! I got a lot of thinking todo now. Not sure I need HP capacity for this bullet, but it'd be nice to have I suppose, having a free bullet every 14th round is a real interesting argument. IIRC where there also some accuracy advantages to a HP, by it moving the center of gravity further back?

I think this buy is going to be closing very soon. Miha said he's waiting on his lathe man who was on holiday. I take it that when he comes back, I'll be getting the directions to close this shortly.
I'm actually starting to wonder this close to the closing, about .452" or .454". I slugged my 1911 barrel to .451" and something, but I still wonder if maybe it would be safer to get a .454" and size to .452", to prevent any possibility of getting undersized bullets?

HDS, My experience with Mihec molds has been, if you order a .452 you will get either a .452 or a .453. I have never gotten an undersized mold from Mihec. I feel his quality is fantastic.

I'll keep you on the list for a 0.452 then.

Note that the moulds in this buy will be available with round pins only. Pentagonal pins were prototyped, and a good pentagonal hollowpoint is not feasible because of the nose configuration of the H&G #68. Sorry for any inconvenience. H. C.

Mike,
If you flip the round pins, you get a flat point, solid nose H&G #68. With the pentagonal pins, I figure that's also what you get. My understanding is that all the moulds are shipping with round pins and that the pentagonals are an optional add-on.
Time-wise, I think it will be "soon." I asked Miha, and he was waiting for his lathe man, who was on holiday. I take that to mean these are being worked on and near done.

Note that the moulds in this buy will be available with round pins only. Pentagonal pins were prototyped, and a good pentagonal hollowpoint is not feasible because of the nose configuration of the H&G #68. Sorry for any inconvenience. H. C.

Hi Mike,
You are "both pins" order #25.
And I have somewhat discouraging news for 25 of you all. Miha is coming to the conclusion that a good pentagonal hollow point is not feasible for this boolit. The small nose on the H&G #68 appears to be the problem. Round hollow points are still a "go."
I had hoped the pentagonals would fly, and I did sell the pentagonals kinda hard to make sure that the number of orders (somewhat more than 15) wouldn't be the reason these didn't work out. I'm sorry if my working up your interest is causing you extra disappointment.
Ultimately, geometry and the laws of nature were against the pentagonal design, and it's very much looking as if geometry and the laws of nature are winning this one.
Miha will post on this topic.

I know I'm not alone in the penta pins sticking to the bullets. Nothing I do seems to keep working. All the little tips and tricks I have read here work for a while and then stop. I even tried spraying them with Frankford Arsenal drop spray which seemed to work the best. I removed the pins so I didn't spray the brass at all. I far prefer the round pins. Maybe if the penta pins had more of a taper to them. I don't know really.

About penta pins for this one:
Pins are to small to produce. Even with round pins I have to shorten the base for 0,015 inch to get the desired 185 gn.
So with this mold you will get round and blank pins. (No extra cost)

RATS .... where did the pics of the 5 pointed flower come from? Someone made it work.
Hi Mike,
Miha made it work with that particular bullet. The thing about the #68 is its long, conical, small-pointed nose. Those other bullets had a wider nose and (please forgive my lack of vocabulary) a rounded convex ogive.
I am sorry about those pictures. I ought to have been clear that the availability of pentagonals was subject to feasibility of design as well as a minimum number of orders, and I don't think I was.

Henry,
Ah ... I do understand better now. I did think the question was a rational one given what had been posted.
Can you tell me if the bullet produced by the 200 gr HP mold feeds in a ramped 1911 barrel?
Hate to back out on a buy ... not done it before and it is a very uncomfortable thing to do, but the 200 gr HP is being rerun now and looks close to closing.
Thanks,

Mike,
I've got no hard feelings, and I don't think anyone has any.
You initially signed up for a pentagonal point, and those just don't work for this design. Unfortunately, that wasn't known until the prototype stage.
I'll take you off the list, and I'm glad there's a pentagonal buy open for you.

This development is completely understandable, if disappointing.
I have the .452-200 RNHP/Penta, and like hicard says, it is great.
I recommend owning both if you can.
The acknowledgement of this problem, and the offer of the flat pins
at no charge, is an indication of Miha’s commitment to making
not only the best possible moulds, but the happiest customers too .
I hope the round HP cavity is as large and deep as possible,
as this will need to work at slightly above target velocities.
Whatever, I’m still in.

I also am going to withdraw at this time.
I am still in, I only wanted a normal HP anyway. My primary reasons for going with a HP capable HG #68 over the solid was that I could vary between 200 and 185gr, and the better accuracy a HP gives you and safety improvement when shooting steel ofcourse. Don't need or want penta pins for that.

The number of molds has nothing to do with when they get done, per se. This buy is well past the minimum number to get the mold on the production schedule.
I heard from Miha a couple of weeks ago, and he said that this mold and my 380/makarov mold will both go onto the CNC machine at the same time (same set up, he suggests), and that would be VERY SOON NOW.
I'm almost expecting a CLOSE BUY message from Miha any day.
The difference between the HP and the original H&G68 are obvious. However, when you turn the pins over to make a solid nose with this mold, there will be a slightly different nose transition (not a true curve) from the angle to the face of the bullet. This one will be a bit more of a sharp edge.

IIRC we will get flat pins with this mold so we won't have to tip the normal pins over, but the nose transition issue will remain. I do not know if that will have any effect on the ballistics and feeding of the bullet?

12-23-2011, 05:55 AM
The difference between the TRUE H&G #68 version that Miha made a couple of months ago, and this one are really minor. You wouldn't see any feeding problems at all. If you had the two castings side by side, you'd know which was which.
But if you showed someone one of these solids by itself, they'd likely think it was just a #68.
Of course, those who buy this mold instead of the solid only #68 mold that was run a few months ago, get the ability to also make the HP version of the boolit. Everyone who gets this mold will be delighted.

I am going to try 7.0 grs of Unique and shoot it into wet sand to test expansion. If they blow apart, I might download a bit until the bullets stay together and mushroom good.

Well, I got my mold today! It looks beautiful as all of Mihec's molds do. Won't be able to cast for a few weeks though, but I thought I would let you all know that they are arriving. A big thanks to HenryC460 for being the honcho for this buy!

I had to go sign for it at the PO. As usual it is a work of art, deserving a framed showcase. But alas it is storming today and I can't cast.
My next open date is next Monday, if I can just wait that long.

I finally got the chance to cast a few with my mold yesterday. Other than the fact it is so heavy it is an absolute joy to use. Once it came up to temp the boolets just fell out when I turned the mold over. I can't wait to see how these shoot.

Can someone please point me to loading data for these? They seem to seat as deep as a 200gr but mine are all dropping at 186-187gr. But if I use 185gr data then that seems like too much powder.
Are they dropping at that weight using the hollow point config or the flat point? Just curious since my HP bullets where more like 182 grains and my flat points where 190gr. But I might have used a tin rich alloy at the time. Need to put in some pure lead next time. I was planning to go after the 200gr SWC loads myself.

My HPs dropped at 184gr +/- 1.0 with my WW with about 8oz tin added to a 20lb pot. I believe Miha got 182gr. Havn't cast any solids yet.

Loaded up the first test run with 5.5gr of Win 231 for some fun this weekend. I did a pound of lead to twenty pounds of lead. I think when the pot goes half empty I'm going to just add lead and see if that does any different. For now here is what I have:

I cast some solids last weekend with a very lean alloy (3 parts pure lead 1 part WW) and those solids came to 196-197 grains. With that alloy I had to cast really hot to get any decent results, and I had to wait a good 5-10 seconds before cutting the sprue, waiting another 5 seconds was a good move as well because the bullets needed to wait before dropping easily.
