I don't know about tossing 8 ounces of lead powered by a handfull of black powder but a 2 bore shotgun with 2 ounces of shot will smash clay targets.

I forget the name of the Ivory hunter who used a 2 bore off & on.. but he remarked every time he touched it off it would spin him like a weather vain. His favorite was a 4 bore that with a hardened RB (1-20) would stun any tusker he put the sights on.

I believe you are recalling Sir Samuel Baker, although he used a 4 bore for the majority of his African hunting and mentions that he was often unseated from his horse by the stout recoil. He also mentions that a 4 bore would completely penetrate a elephant and the recovered bullet could often be used again without recasting. Baker mentions a heavy rifle several times and I'm fairly sure it was a 2 bore.
