45-70 mold ?

Is the Lyman 1-Cavity Bullet Mold #457132 a good mold for a 45-70Sharps/ Springfield trap door rifle? I don't want to invest in to many molds as the cost can get high. I will primarily be paper punching from 100 to 300 yards. I may even try hunting with the trapdoor.

The lyman postell shoots good in mine even with a 22:1 twist. I did get lucky and find a mould that cast round bullets large enough to use in my barrel.

Yes it works well and is sort of the "gold" standard that everyone compares their bullet to.It's a carryover bullet from way back when target shooting was the national pasttime.
Another good one altho a bit more expensive is the saeco 645.

The 457132 is a natural match with the Sharps. But the 457125 makes a fine pair with the Trapdoor.

The Government bullet (457125) will usually shoot well in both types.

If looking for good economy in a mold that is well suited to what may be considered the generous bore/groove dimensions commonly found in Springfield Trapdoors you need look no further than the Lee/Wolf 457/405 HB
It is a close copy of the original arsenal design for the Trapdoor.
It will easily deliver 2MOA in my Springfields. Also consider that it will have less recoil than either the 457125 or 457132

Would the Lyman 457677 be a good choice also? They say it can be seated out further to allow more powder. All in all the Postell design seems like the best bet for a heavy bullet. I have Lee's 405 for the trap door.(no wad with this one , right? )

Based on the critereon you specified, I would not advise getting the 457677.
Not because it's a 'bad bullet', but because it is not as popular among most shooters.

High popularity means high satisfaction, and that comes from high rates of success. If you really want to limit the number of moulds you own, you should go only with those which work best for 'everyone'.

If yours was a Pedersoli rifle, I would have a different suggestion. But, up to this point, people have been just answering the questions you asked ... without trying to drag you in other directions.

+1 on the above posts. Either the 457125, or the 457132, in that order.

my Sharps is Sharps from Montana. I think I will go with the 457125
