I was wondering if I could make one of these stoves to smelt using wood instead of costly propane. And without having to build a giant campfire.

Think you could get one to 600+ deg. at the pot?

Yes it should work.

OK. I'll probably give building one a try, hard part will be firing the bricks.

I guess nobody here cares about "green"/hippie tech. Propane is a lot easier.

I think the idea is a good one. I think you could make a similar stove with scrap pipe also. If I remember correctly the idea of the rocket stove is to get a ventury effect to cause a forced air effect. I have seen some descritiosn fo bronze age furnaces that use a similar technique only the furnace was built in the ground.

Primitive technology can still be a good technology.

Please report back.

rocket stoves are cheap to make

and should be able to produce lots of heat, the only problem would be the short burn time, and the "Need to Feed" them very often

BUT should work well.

Thanks for the replies.

If I try one I'll post up results. Not to much problem keeping it fed, lots of sticks around here and supposedly that's what they like to eat.
