View Full Version : Boolits do weird things

I shot my .303 a little bit yesterday. I found the two boolits below when I was done. They're 316299s. The top one was just about to come out the back of a Poplar post that my target board is fastened to. I had to dig it out with my pocket knife.

The bottom one went through a 8 inch section of Knotty pine that I shot at just for kicks and giggles. It skidded to a stop about four feet behind the log. Both pieces of wood were cut back in November.

I realize that Poplar is a bit harder than Knotty pine, but not by much. It just seems weird that one would totally mushroom and stop in about 5 inches of wood and the other would go through about 8 inches of wood barely deformed.

Go figure.

Jim

Did 1 go with the grain & 1 against ???

That is a dramatic difference !!!

Both boolits went through the side of each piece of wood, almost dead center.

Water content of the wood maybe

Bet the poplar was wet

Had someting like that happen to me , but with the 223

I was shooting 2 liter pop bottles , using Nosler 50 gr Balist tip bullets
Shoot a water filled pop bottle
No exit , bullet fragments in the bottom of the bottle and the back blown out
A paper target 5' behind would either be untouched or just some fragments

But when I shot a dry 7-8" dia white ash fire wood chunk
There would be a exit and a perfict 22 cal hole in the paper

I dunno, John, could be. Like I said, the Poplar and the Knotty Pine were both cut back in November.

You probably have female boolits that have a mind of their own and will do what they want!
