I saw on another board a discussion of HP's using a .458 405gr. hollow point mfg. by Lyman. They don't make them anymore as far as I can find out. Does anyone out there have one and what do you think of it?

This is a blast from the past...

Are you still interested in a .45 cal 405 HP bullet?

I just bought a Lee that supposed to throw that slug, it arrived last night and I've only had a few minutes to fondel it. This is the Hollow Point, not the Hollow Base (got one of the those too).

If you want some slugs to try let me know and I pour some for you.
I have these alloys ready to go:
Lyman #2
Lyman #2 mixed50/50 lead
20:1
and straight WW.

rusty, I have a LEE 459-405-HB. I only cast pure lead for my 45 cal Muzzleloader.
With pure lead I can only get 385 gr bullets. How much do your bullets weigh out of your mould? Thanks Ron

The Lee 405 HB I got a couple of weeks ago casts a 394 gr. boolit from WW alloy. I'd guess it would easily weigh 405 gr. in pure lead.

I have no idea what alloy it is as its the bullet that came in the mold. Its just markable with my thumb nail. It weighs 412 gr diameter .458-.459.

idahoron, my Lee 405 HB weighs 393 cast from 20:1.

Looks like their current offering only with a HP. Great find. Good luck. Let us know how they shoot.

I don't know why mine throws light bullets. I have a lead hardness tester my lead is between butter and 8 BHN. I like the way the bullets shoot out of my gun so I am not wanting to change. I just thought it was interesting. Ron

With 20/1 it throws 465 gr boolits.

Do I care?? Nope, shoots great out of my Uberti Hi Wall.

Well enough for short range shoots (300 yards max) But well enough to hit the Creedmore buff at 1000 meters too !!!

My 400 gr Lee plan base throws 385 gr boolits out of #2 alloy.

Might just have to get one of those hollow pointers too.

Good Shooting,
