I finally received the "Double Rifle" I found on the internet. Had it shipped from PA to MA.

I had to do a few things to it to get it to come close to grouping. The inserts were lose in the barrels. I had to put them into my lathe and take a few thousands off the collors that the regulator excentrics were touching. I also replaced the two "O" rings with larger diameter ones.

The sights were totally useless. A brass front bead and a simple piece of tin beny to 90 degrees with a "V" cut into it. No adjustment at all. I had a bunch of old front sight ramps in my junk drawer and along with a surplus rear ramp, I drilled and tapped the barrels and installed.

I loaded up a mid load of Reloader #7 under some 405G bullets and headed to the range.

First two shots were at 1 O'clock, about 6 inches out of the bulls-eye at 25 yards. Both holes were 3.5" apart.

I pushed the target out to 50 yards and adjusted the sights. Both shots were in an 8" bulls-eye at 4.75 inches apart.

I shot the remaining loads just to get the feel of the gun. I'll return with various loads and play around with the regulating excentics later this week.

So for $600....I'm in the Double Rifle game........"Wild Hogs.....Look Out!"

I ordered a new English style butt pad and will refinish the stock. I also will install inset sling swivels.

I traded into one of the old Mercury 10 gauge 3 1/2" magnum doubles. The, I read H&H's book of Fosberry and the Paradox Rifles. I got a 10 gauge rifled barrel, and my gunsmith is in process on it. He parted two pieces about 5 1/2" long and turned them down slowly to a diameter he figured out, and cut the barrels of the 10ga at 21 inches. He is threading the barrels to that diameter and threading them, as if for long choke tubes. The ends will stick out like the ones in the picture, and be knurled. You can turn them in and out to regulate, for me dead on at 50yds. Black Powder or 777 loads with a 960gr truncated cone grease groove boolit.

He thinks mid to late June.

i just got done putting one together as well. my barrel measured 19.75" instead of 20". i too had to machine a bit off those collars, but i also made up2 brass spacers to make up for the missing .25" of barrel. i've installed the factory provided rear sight, but may chage that if needed. i kind of like the low profile design if it shoots to where i need it to. i have not shot it with real loads yet, but i did shoot it with 3gr of green dot and a 360gr boolit. at 10 yards it;s going 3" high, and the spread is about the width of the barrels. i can;t wait to get out to the range with this. here are a couple of pics.

rbertalotto - which of the inserts seem to regulate best for you, #1 or #2?

interesting thread.

i am in process of making up barrel sets for shotgun lining. working with 2 guns. a 16 gauge double underlug with crossbolt and sidelocks/hammers with post '91 proofing using 375 win (38-55) barrels from a winchester overrun and 30-30 barrels from a marlin overrun. have added weld stock to acheive turning dimensions and turned to suit, am threading muzzles tomorrow, and making muzzle nuts. a 12 gauge belgian with back action sidelocks/hammers and strait wrist with pre '93 proof marks using marlin '95 45-70 barrels.

every barrel required welding to get turnable profiles, and each will need to have an extractor fitted as a final step. each gun gets a ramp front sight and a folding ladder sight for longer range elevation.

the german gun with nitro proofing, double underlug and greener crossbolt is sanctioned for such conversions to full power loads, but the "manton" marked belgian is just a single underlug and BP proofed, so will have to be held to 45-70 BP ballistics. shotshells for this gun will be all brass BP handloads, as well.

got out with mine today. load was RD350 over 28gr 5744. mine shot about 20" high. right barrel is about 6" to the right, the left one is about 2" to the left. i'll have to try a couple of other distances to find out if the barrels are too far appart or if they are too close and have already crossed.

A double rifle should never cross. General rules are:
If the rifle is shooting each barrel wide then increase the powder charge to try to bring the point of impact closer.
If the rifle is crossing then reduce the powder charge until it doesnt.

A double rifle should never be rested on a bench rest. Your front hand should wrap around the barrels and grip it firmly. Best way to shoot one of these is off shooting sticks.

Answer:

My rifle was bought used and only came with the "one dot" spacers. I emailed EAA to see if I could buy the "two dot" spacers and they had no idea what I was talking about.

BTW, I love the brass spacers. Look kind of neat!

With adjustable sights, you can easily set elevation and windage. Still would need to regulate. I have no idea how you can use the factory sights that the inserts were supplied with. A million to one odds that they would even be close to Point of Aim.

Plus, the rear sight was so low, I simply couldn't get my head down low enough.

Greetings
Years ago I decided to start shooting lowly round ball through my Fox B 12. Suprisingly it shoots rather well out to 50 yards. All I did was ream both chokes to .003 constiction and got a .685 mold. Standard Win. red wads and 30 grains of Unique make for one very lethal pig load. Probably would be effective for any criter roaming our side of this world.
But the inserts would be another option.

This week I found time to complete;y refinish the stock on my "CDR" (Cheap Double Rifle)

There was actually some pretty nice wood under that crappy factory finish

After 20 coats of Tung Oil, Hand Rubbed......It ain't no H&H, but then again, it only cost $600!

Sling swivels were inlet into the forearm and the stock

I worked up some loads for the "CDR"........50g of RL7 under a 325g Beartooth Gas Checked bullet......

This is three shots from each barrel at 25 yds using a front "bean bag" rest........

http://images55.fotki.com/v508/photos/2/36012/9695081/DSC_2767-vi.jpg

And this is two shots from each barrel at the same distance from standing, unsupported .....

http://images58.fotki.com/v510/photos/2/36012/9695081/DSC_2766-vi.jpg

The first two shots were 2.5" apart....Easily minute of hog!

That left barrel is a honey! Now I just need to figure out a way to get the right barrel to move a bit to the left.........

Hornsurgeon........A question.......

Are you using any "o" rings under your brass spacers?

I really like the look of those spacers and might turn some myself........

I have finally found everything to put one of these together. I am using an external hammer gun for a host. The bounty hunters are HARD to find right now.
I found the tubes as USSG.

orings between the spacers and the nuts. the brass spacers bear directly on the barrels.

re the vintage 16 gauge german gun i am workign with:

have since turned the 45-70 barrel set i had intended to use in a 12 gauge down for my 16 gauge. shotgun barrels are shortened to 24" and rifle sights added. am getting groups at 25 yards similar to rbertalotto with a 500 grain spire over 14 grains of blue dot at 1000 fps. am waiting delivery of .375 sized castings to validate with the 375 win barrel set before adjusting. still haven't had time to turn the 30-30 barrel set, but expect it will print similarly.

measurement of center of bore at muzzle and breach reveals a difference of about .23". looks like i will be lifting the upper rib and removing the lower rib for placement of soldered shims at 2-3 places to twist barrels into a better alignment. will prolly have to make up a new lower rib and add a tapered shim under the top rib to maintain sight profile. waiting for test firing results in all possibel combinations before proceeding.

so we're not there yet in terms of a usable 150-200 yard gun, but there is just something neat about picking up a couple of big brass cases that are topped with 500 grain bullets and sliding them into a double rifle...

BTW, you need to make up a sling swivel for tapping into your lower rib and add a single strap 1" leather sling, well used, of course.

I admire you double rifle guys.Have any of you tried the shells with lasers to help regulate??I realize it will only get you close but may save much time and hair.A well fitting double rifle is like a good bird gun it shoots where you look when snapped up. Frank C.

My experience with all those "laser cartridges" is they only get you on paper. I can simply look through the bore to accomplish that.

Unfortunatly, the only way to fine tune a double is with load development or expensive re-regulation.

With a bit of a change i load, I've got my CDR shooting into a 1 gal milk jug at 50 yards,,,,,,everytime!

I'm more than happy with that!

BTW, here's me shooting a $30,000 Holland and Holland 500 Nitro with handloads from Elmer Keith!!!!!!

I'm the tall, extremely handsome fellow that shot first. I'm the one offering my keys to my truck to the DR owner.........

The recoil was about like an H&R 10ga ..............No way near as bad as I expected.

Your a modest man Roy. I would imagine with a pist cape buff bearing down on a fella he wouldn't even feel the recoil. Frank C.

All these pictures of a double rifle in 45-70 got me wanting one, and when hornsurgeon had his up for sale I bought it. I had a minor problem with the gun shop but no fault of hornsurgeon who is great to deal with by the way. When I went down to the gun shop to do the paper work I found a Baikal MP221 in 45-70 and it ended up following me home as well.

Now I have two double rifles in 45-70 that I am waiting to shoot. The problem is I had cataract surgery on the 21st of June and they are doing the other eye this Monday so I will not be able to shoot right away.

On another thread somebody asked about scopes for hunting and their preferences, and I mentioned how I like the Nikon Monarch Gold scopes in 1.5X-6X42mm so here is a picture of the two rifles. The MP221 has the Nikon scope mounted on it and lookes like it was made for it.http://castboolits.gunloads.com/imagehosting/thum_31404e17cda3f302e.jpg (http://castboolits.gunloads.com/vbimghost.php?do=displayimg&imgid=1418)
