Hi all, have any you guys tried AA5744 in 45 colt ? I done a search but really haven't found anything useful. Ive been working with a 340 gr boolit in my old Vaquero.would like to get this combo to about 1100 fps. Im up to 21 grains of 5744 for 1030 fps. It probably don't mean a whole lot but the cases fall freely from the cylinder and the spent primers look fine. but with no loading data I stopped there. tried to call Western Powders several times today but no answer. left my phone number and no one has returned my call...BTW..I do have other powders that work very good...but I have a lot of this AA5744. Thanks....frontloader

Linebaugh shows using H110 to get a 350 gr slug up to 1092 fps. I have great luck with H110 in my .45 Blackhawk, but I must admit I haven't used a 340gr boolit! Makes my wrists hurt thinking about it. At the going price of 5744 these days I would save it for my rifles using cast boolits.

What Gee Whiz said. Don't know your seating depth, but using a wild guess Quickload says you're right up there. One round seated too deep and you may have to buy a new gun.

I can't Imagine anything that would notice that 70FPS!

You are pretty Close! How does that 5744 work in a revolver? I just got some and was thinking about trying it in handgun.

I've tried 5744 in .45 Colt and it left gobs of unburnt powder :dung_hits_fan:

yea I do use H110 and my go to is Lil Gun . 5.7 MAN ....during my search I read several post that said it was dirty and left unburned powder in the barrel. I haven't found that to be an issue in my revolver.I noticed those posters were using lighter boolits and less than 18 grains of AA5744. my goal WAS to reach 1100 fps over my crony safely then start loading back down looking for accuracy. havent got that far yet. but its looking good....maybe Western Powders will give me a call next week......frontloader

Does that in nearly everything. I've had one or two instances where an unburnt grain got trapped by the shoulder of a bottleneck case and left a big dent in it. But I still like it for light loads in rifle cases - .35 Rem in particular.

I like 5744 for 375 WCF and 45-70 loads and 300/221 fireball - never found good load in 44 mag or 45 colt with it.

Hey , I just talked to a tech at Western Powders and he said my load of 21 grains of AA5744 and a 340 grain boolit was right at 34,000 PSI ,so this is where I stop......Artful...I bought this powder a few years ago to shoot in my 45/70 15" TC Encore which I no longer have. I don't recall ever having any unburned powder issues. actually it shot very accurate with my 340/ 458 Lee boolit.......Thanks ....frontloader

So, how about using it in a .454 Casull?
