Any suggestions on a good cast boolit for deer & bear 100-200 yards?
Would a gascheck be needed?
Any dealers to buy them from?

Thanks

I just bought a Ranch Dog mold, it's the TLC311-165-RF. This bullet is design just for hunting with a 30-30.

If you don't cast your own yet they're available from Bull shop, the web site is down right now, but here's the link.

I just got a ranch dog 311165 mold to try for this year on deer. I love the meplat on the ranch dog bullets they look like real winners. Although I have had a lot of success with the rcbs 30-180 FN.

Again, 311041 is the standard by which all other 30-30 bullets a re judged and want to be. It is a very hard cast bullet to better for the 30-30 or most any other suitable .30 cal.

The RD 311165 was made to fit the Marlin .30-30 throat, and many others are cut with a much tighter leade, meaning the 311165 nose may have chamering issues in other brands unless you trim the brass short or use them in a single-shot crimped where you want them instead of in the groove.

I have an NOE copy of Mr. Reamy's regular-groove design and it is a tack driver in my Marlin.

The 311041 is my top pick.

I would use a gas-checked design for hunting due to the velocity limitations of plain base and how lower velocities drastically shorten effective hunting range.

I wouldn't choose a .30-30 for hunting bear at ANY range, but it will do in a pinch if you know how to use it.

RCBS 30-180FN works fine for me. I can duplicate the 303 Savage factory load easily and surpass 30-30 factory loads by quite a margin. I'd have no qualms about pursuing Black Bear with it, no experience with the western breeds like the Grizzly.

If you want to shoot cast in excess of 100 yards I very, very strongly suggest you do some actual shooting at those ranges until you can put all your rounds inside a 9" paper plate. A cast FN has a different trajectory than more streamlined jacketed fodder. You need to get used to that.

I like the heavier 180-190 grain flat nosed designs. At .30/30 velocities they give just a bit more "oomph" than 150-165 grain designs.

+1 for
RD 311 165, Lymn 311041 and the RCBS 180 in 30-30s.

All are gas checked killers when hard enough and sized right.
I've killed LOTs of pigs with the slugs from a Saeco #315 four cavity mold as well, which casts about 160 grains.
25-26 grains of Reloader 7.

hard to add to that list unless your 30-30 is a bolt gun.
then i'd go with the lyman loverign in a savage 340 or it's kind.
and i really like the rcbs 150 fn gc it does very well in the 308 and 30-06 guns around here.
so much so that if i could get a 4 cavity i would probably get rid of my other 30 cal molds.
except that loverign mold it was cut by walt at nei and is a champ.

Another plus for the RD 165. Also am fond of the Lee 150.

I'm with Larry and Bret on this one. For the .30-30, it's hard to beat the Lyman 311041 or the RCBS 30-180-FP.

The Lee copy of the 311041 is just as good, IMO. It's their C-309-170-F. Mine is a single-cavity mold which suits me as I don't need these in huge quantity.

I launch them plain-based at 1200 for a nice plinker load, or slip on a gas check and get up to 2100 fps from my Savage 340. Can't imagine why I'd need anything else.

Your intended use is exactly what 31141 was designed for.

I don't know how much actual difference there is between the RCBS 30-180 FN and Lyman 311041, performance-wise I mean, on target or hunting. What I do know is that if you order and RCBS and you get a mould that drops .307/.298 or something odd like that you can contact RCBS and someone will actually try and make you a happy customer. Considering the price difference is small and that the RBCS has a little more FN...it's an easy decision for me. That's not putting Lee or Accurate or NOE or anyone else down. Any FN that drops at least .310 and weighs in around 185-195 grs. will probably do a fine job.

Lyman 311407 and Saeco 315 are good and carry a lot of lube, many have had success with Micro Groove rifles with them. If you want a bore rider 31141 is the standby.

As stated before, the 311041. Perfect boolit for the 30-30.

Since you said deer and Bear. I like the RCBS 30-180-FN. It's 180 grains when cast from Linotype. Mine is a nice one that cast .310 x .300” and weighs 196 grains from 2/6 alloy. Hits right on 200 grains from 50 / 50 alloy. It’s just enough larger than the Lyman to make it a better bear bullet IMHO. Also has that nice fat meplat and since I’d cast a bear bullet as non expanding the larger meplat will matter. RCBS 180 has a reputation for putting animals down.

My no. 2 daughter and her BF are in the AZ bear drawing. If she draws a tag I’m loading some 30-30 Win with RCBS 30-180-FN I have cast from 2/6 plus extra tin over 35gr WW760 for 2080 fps advertised. Never shot that load or that bullet from her rifle. Always loaded it for light recoil as she’s only 115 pounds with boots and makeup. For bear she’ll just have to buck up and shoot the big boolit :)

That Accurate Molds 180 grain does look like a nice bullet. You could run it 200 fps faster in a 30-30. All said any of the 170 to 200 grain flat nose bullets will put the hurt on them. I have 150, 180 and the RCBS 200 grain. If we weren't going to take the 200 grain bullet bear hunting it’s hard to figure why I have it.

For bear she’ll just have to buck up and shoot the big boolitMay I suggest that for bear she won't even notice the recoil![smilie=1:
