there is a load in the lyman cast bullet book for 44 special using IMR SR4759 powder (11.9-13.4g). has anyone ever used this load? i have not seen SR4759 used in a pistol load before. and before i blow up my S&W, i want to make sure it is not a typo! i checked online @ hodgedon.com, but they do not list a load using it. i normally use the SR4759 for reduced power rifle loads.

I haven't used it but it looks reasonable to me, doesn't look like a typo.

Lyman #3 lists the 4759 load. They list it and 4756 with 3 different bullets so my assumption would be it is correct. 4759 is a slower burning powder than 2400 and the charges listed are fairly close so it seems safe to me. As always start at the "start load" and work up.

My RCBS CB Manual #1 lists 11.5 to 12.5 of SR4759 and also 6.0 to 7.0 of SR4756, with their 44-250-SWC.

I doubt very much if it's a typo since they're both on the same page with the same boolit.

I have used 4759 in 44 Magnum, it worked OK, but not great. I got my magnum data from an old DuPont powder brochure from the early 70's. I just looked at the same load guide and they don't give a recommendation for 4759 in 44 Special. I would be surprised if you get a good burn at Special pressures and a hand gun barrel.
