Just picked up the above mentioned rifle. Been serching around for a lighter range load. I have read a few shoot the Ideal/Lyman 358311. I have a single mold and many cast but no powder information. Any tips would be awesome, I have not reloaded for a rifle yet.

Thanks, FWest

My old Lyman 45th lists 10.0-13.0 Unique for 1562-1848fps. 2400 from 14.0-21.0 for 1402-1850fps. IMR 4227 froom 16.0-26gr and 1396-2066fps, all with 150gr cast.

You'll probably want to size 'em as fat as will chamber, and start with the low end charges.

My cowboy silhouette load for the 35 rem is the Ranch Dog 190 over a full case (12 grains) of Trail Boss. Bullets are water dropped wheel weights, no gas check, tumble lubed. Approx. 1500 fps, 3 inch groups at 200M with iron sights. No leading. Works for me!

As an aside, I have not been able to get very good accuracy in this rifle using pistol bullets. Either this Ranch Dog design or the RCBS 200gr. rifle bullets are far more accurate than any pistol design.

If you're going to try and use the 358311 I'd start with something like 5.0 Unique, not 10. That PB 311 wants to start slow.

Thanks for the information guys. I have a checkmaker for 35 PB , would that improve accuracy ? I have not purchased any powder yet. Is Unique what I should get ? I have some Universal.

.35 Rem Marlins run big. My early SC has a groove of .362 or .363 and pistol bullets do not work at all well. Slug your bore and proceed accordingly. With the right size bullet of 200 or more grains, my specimin is easy to work with.

GC's make things easier. They aren't a cure all. If you are exceeding 12-1400 fps thay makes thing very, very much easier. Accuracy will depend on fit and the barrels needs in addition to the load and alloy/GC.

I have used the 190 gr RanchDog and another 185 gr plainbase round nose bullet with 12.7 gr. Unique (what the dipper threw) with good plinker accuracy.

Another more expensive (powder-wise) load used 20 gr. of SR 4759 or 21 gr. H-4227 for the same 1-1/2" 50 yd. accuracy. This is with a 336 and open sights.

The thread is about shoulder set back using light loads in 35 whelen. You can extrapolate to 35 Rem. The expanding gas does not expand the case enough so that it expands to meet the chamber walls fully. It is important to use fireformed cases when using light loads in the 35 Rem. I have noticed, like others that neck sizing, rather than FL sizing clears up most problems with shoulder setback.

More great information, thanks very much.
I'm using an RCBS 2 die set and have adjusted per the directions. The sizer/decapper does not seem to alter any area other than the case neck ??

I used to shoot the 358311 through mine using about 8 grains of Red Dot if I remember right. I only ever shot it at 50 yards with that load, but remember that it shot pretty well. Mine is a long barrelled one that is pre-Microgroove.
