I don't know what a custom design would give you but I have had good results with the Ly 84 gr 244496 and the RCBS 95 gr FP. BOth are gc and needed with 12-14 gr of 2400. A rb cast 0.244 could be interesting.

What kind of velocities are you getting with that load?

Looks like you are a ham too. N2EQS here. -... - --... ...--

Purpose of the load is a big help for us to give a suggestion.

Generally the heaviest bullets get the best accuracy with cast bullets in rifles. Modest velocities and pressures too.

Here is a couple suggestions from the Lyman Cast Bullet 4th handbook:

85 gr cast Lyman #2 alloy, Saco mold #243 Gas check required
start- 14 gr AA5744/ 1622 fps Max. 21.5 gr AA5744/ 2324 fps

95 gr cast Linotype alloy, RCBS mold #243-095-SP Gas check required
14.5 gr AA5744/ 1617 fps 22.5 gr AA5744/ 2335 fps

The Lyman #2 alloy will expand on game, the Linotype will not as it is too hard.

Gas checking is very easy with the Lee lube and Size kit and use a die on your press to size the bullets and crimp on the check in one step. Tumble lube before and after sizing/checking. The lube comes with the kit.

Bullet fit is the most important aspect for accuracy with cast bullets. Slug your bore and measure your barrel Groove to groove diameter on the slug. A bullet sized .002" over the G to G diameter is a great place to start and very standard.

If you want to get started faster and easier, instead of mixing your own alloys, Rotometals linked at the page top sells these alloys ready to use in ingot form. One pound = 7000 grains, so one pound will yield 82 bullets at 85 grains each. Most pots start well with 10 or more pounds in them.

I have never bothered to run it through the chrony. It is a target and 100 yd gopher load.

Good to have you on the best forum for our hobby of shooting/casting/handloading..you name it and many someones here are the best in the business. You can find all the good help you need. I just got a .243 mould and have cast up several but I don't have a sizer so I can't give you any recommendations yet. I did want to also say 73 from WA0ATU.

I friend of mine is shooting a .243 Encore with the SAECO truncated cone bore rider with 4198 powder and getting excellent groups.

The RCBS 95 SP runs just a mite better in my Rem 788 x 243 than does the Lyman #244496. 12.0 grains of 2400 gives 1625-1650 FPS with the RCBS boolit. I have shot MANY DOZENS of 100 yard 5-shot groups at or under 1.25" with this combination. It is among my favorite cast boolit rifle loads, and has accounted for a lot of varmints over the past 8 years or so.

One of these days, I intend to push the RCBS boolit faster, to see what its accurate velocity limits might be. I have a similar quest pending with the 9.3 x 62 and 270 grain MM flatpoint, and will probably run both simultaneously--and soon.
