Ok, I am giving this topic a life of it's own. I have tossed it around in other threads. But, I want to address this directly and hear from folks experienced with all sorts of powders.

Missing part of the equation: Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan .454 Casull 2 1/2" Barrel + 360 gr PB + ? Powder & ? Wt.=1,000 FPS

http://www.accuratemolds.com/bullet_detail.php?bullet=45-360C-D.png

Which powders and what weights would you use to hit 1,000 FPS with this length of barrel and plain base bullet? And, why? Educate me.

Thanks

I am curious about what 2 1/2" gun you are using to shoot this 360gr bullet.

That is going to hurt ! :) :)

It is a Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan .454 Casull.

21gr H110, mag primer. Starting load for 454 360gr. It's also the max Ruger Only 45 Colt load. I get 1130-1150ish fps in my 4" 45 Colt Redhawk with 21.5 gr. You might be a little over 1000 but close enough. That's where I'd start. Don't go any lower with H110!

Vitavouri N110 is a good powder for the 454 as well. Not quite the velocity as H110 but starting load may work better for you keeping at 1000.

The voluminous case complicates ignition. The 2 1/2" barrel is going to limit powder choices. The bullet weight has a certain limiting factor. The PB limits them yet again.

If this were cast college, you are going for your doctorate. It shouldn't be hard to figure out on paper for the velocity. The paper used for the target "may" be a whole nuther thing.

No matter what you choose, be like the easterners in the old cowboy films where they draw and raise the gun straight up over their head and point it at the sky and lower the arm gently before you lower to shoot each shot.

Go with what Horace Greeley advised them before those easterners left, "Seat deep my friend, seat DEEP."

The result of your equation is..........PAIN.

Shooting it at night should be en'lightening'

Regardless of barrel length, the slower powders in the magnum pistols usually produce
the highest velocities. Unfortunately, that also means horrendous muzzle flash and noise
with the shortest barrels.

Compromising on less than max vel in a short barrel will lead to something more like
Unique which will not produce maximum possible velocity, but will produce much less
sturm und drang when ignited. I expect that you will need hearing aids if ever you do
actually have to use that beastie in self defense without hearing protection.

I like Bluedot for reduced power loads in .454 Casull. If I were loading your boolit, I'd start out with 14 grains.

One of my favoite light loads is the Lee 255 SWC and 17 grains of Bluedot. It runs about 1300 fps. in my 4 5/8" barreled F.A.

1000fps w/ a 360gr bullet should be easily done w/ several powders. I shoot a 300grLFP in the 4 5/8" 45colt to 1000fps w/ 16gr of 2400, that would be where I would start & work up. H110 is a good choice for downloading & you are downloading in the big 454 case.

H110 is a good choice for downloading [/QUOTE]

I have never found this to be true with H110, quite the opposite.

I don't think H110 is a good one to download with. Others warn against it and so does Hercules.

Never download a .454 with H110! The primer is the bad thing for the powder. A starting load can stick a boolit in the bore.
This is a good answer.
The short barrel really needs a faster powder.
