Has anyone had success with WC-820 (or AA#9) in the .444? I was thinking about getting a 300 or so grain gaschecked mold for my short barreled (circa '99 vintage w/ "Ballard" rifling) and I have a bunch of WC-820 that I'd like to use. I don't want to use fillers but regularly heat treat boolits.

Thanks,
MJ

The Milsurp WC820 varies by lot. If your supplier said use AA#9 data, start %5 below a recommended minimum charge in grains for AA9 and work up a load in 1 grain increments.

I use WC820 and the seller recommended using H110 data and start below minimum for my batch.

WC820 is position sensitive on ignition and loads less than about 80% density will prefer filler for good ignition. If the loads you choose are low on volume, I can help you get started using fillers and also many others here too. I use the WC820 with filler in my .500 S&W rifle loads with great success.

If fillers are needed in the .500S&W then I'll just shift to another powder for the .444. I just bought a jug of 4759 from Graf... just before he raised his price 5 skins. My lot of WC-820 is almost a carbon copy of AA#9 and it works great in the 30-30 with about 16-16.5 grains and a 200 grain boolit... no fillers necessary for great results. I just don't shoot 200 grain boolits from my 30-30 anymore and was looking for another way to burn the stuff.

I would stay away from that powder for .444.

The WC846 (hope I got the number right) that is the equivalent of H335 is fantastic in the .444. I think I have my load data around somewhere.

WC820 is wonderful for .357, 41, .44, and 45 calibers including 454 Casull. And of course, the .30 Carbine for which it was originally used.:awesome:

I use for loading a 300gr gc boolit for a 44mag and shoot it my 12" Encore and my Dan wesson 44mag 8". very accurate in both. It gives me the same results as
H110 in the accuracy department.

I guess I wasn't specific enough about my load requirements. I want to keep it under 1900 fps with a 290-300 grain boolit while using a light powder charge. For example:

Using QuickLoad and selecting Lee C430-310-RF and reducing its weight to 295 grains, 29 grains of AA#9 produces 1805 fps from a 18.5" barrel. Supposedly, the case will be filled 58.5% and the chamber pressure will be about 34K PSI... which is within the realm of gas checked, HT'd boolits. I don't expect the results of such a load to produce the fine accuracy I experienced with the 30-30 and WC-820, but I suppose success is within the realm of possibility.

You can include BPI Original filler in your calculation in this way:

Calculate the empty space between charge and bullet in cc

BPI weighs 6 grains per cc at 5% suggested compression

Add the weight of the BPI you require to the bullet weight for total projectile weight in your Quickload parameters.

The BPI dispenses easily with Lee Scoops or I use my Lyman #55 measure with the clapper on it very successfully with BPI. For straight walled cases in general, put the BPI in over the powder charge to fill the case 3/16" short of the case mouth and compress it with bullet seating.
