Is it possible to fit an old lyman 45 with a new handle, say for a 450 or 4500?

The local dealer takes trade-ins from time to time and right now he has a model 45 that he wants $50 for. It comes with a few dies and an interesting little home made heater setup but there is a catch.

I can see a small crack forming in the cast iron handle. Maybe it will last forever but I just want to know if it is still worth $50 if the handle snaps off on the first pull.

Any thoughts would be appriciated.

Did you see my post where I made a couple handle/linkage replacements ?
I like the new handle so much better, it has more leverage and the linkage is stronger.
I now dislike using the 45 with the original handle.
If I make another one, I'll space the two holes in the handle a little
farther apart than the original (these two handles, I used the exact spacing of the original).
I may also spend a little more time on the linkage,
I just bend a strip of 12 ga. sheet steel in a vice.
You were handy with Pat's ejection part on the Checkmaker,
you should be able to do something here.

Is it worth $50 ? if you can use the dies
or they are a popular size,
they will sell or trade for the ones you need,
then it's worth $50.

Ok guys, after reading your comments I picked up the sizer on my way home today.

Thanks for the pictures JonB, That is exactly what I was looking for. I am sure that I can produce something like that.

KCSO, while I may not need the press handle, it does appear that I am missing the ratchet handle and that seems like a nice thing to have. Does your parts 45 have one of those puppies that you might be willing to part with?

If not does anyone know if the ratchet handle is still the same on the newer ones?

Sorry for the 20 questions, you guys are great!

Is it really just a 1/4 drive ratchet?

Heck I think I may have one of those in the toolbox!

Kind of... it's a 1/4" HEX DRIVE ratchet, IIRC.

Thanks for the pictures of your handle, I was contemplating a new lube sizer due to the force required with the "paint brush" handle. I made one today after work, just needs the finishing touches to look good but works much better.

imitation is the sincerest form of flattery !!!

How does it work ?

It is a copy. Thanks again for sharing. I checked your picture a few times and even painted it gloss black. It was made with scrap steel and a Lee wooden ball from my turret press. It's got a bronze bushing in the piviot and I reused the stock stud. Also made a ball stud for the lower mount. It functions very smooth and much more confortable on the hand. Your handle design is a major improvement IMHO.

And you're both after my own heart - I put round knobs on anything I have to replace! Like it so much better than a shovel-handle, or handle-bar grip, for example.
Lookin' Good, Guys!

Nice job guys. If you use a 1/4" socket, I found a deep well works best for me.

what would it cost to make me one of these handles. I picked up a 45 for 20 bucks on ebay and it has no handle.

Disclaimer: I don't sell handle kits.

In 2012, I sold 21 handle kits for $20 each. I called them the "Rev II" Handle Kit. They were an improvement over what is pictured above. The thread linked to below shows how the Rev II came to be. If you are handy, you could build your own.
