The last few days
I have been working on a idea as to why some of the 223 groups have flyers
Start at the begining

I have a 75 yard rifle range in the barn
Where I can shoot any time I like
Inside , no wind , rain ect
Nice solid bench

But last week my brother moved in the years corn and bean seed
Pallets of seed bags , all nicely wraped in cling wrap

He left me a path 18 -24" wide for about 1/3 of the way to shoot through

No problem
So I shot some groups out of the AR that has a 1-8 barrel ( single load , not mag fed )
A 20" barrel that shoots J bullets into tiny groups

As I shot some groups , some were great
Some good expect for a flyer
Others were mostly flyers

But when I walked between the pallets , instead of around
I noticed specks of bullet lube on the cling wrap

So that got me thinking :groner:
If lube flys off just a part of the bullet
Then the bullet will not be stable
Probely resulting in the flyers I was getting

So I got to thinking
I need to either get all the lube to fly off as soon as the boolit exits the muzzle
Exactly the same each time

Probely do able
But not by me , unless I have lots more time

Or use a lube that will all remain in the groves
Regaurdless of the velosity and Barrel twist

The load is NOE 70 gr sized at .225 , Gator Check , 20 gr AA2495 , Rem 7 1/2 in a Fed case
Just under 2400 FPS is my best guess , as I have not checked it yeat
This load has produced several 3/4" groups
But then throws flyers

With no aperant reason

Any ideas on how to get all the lube to stay in the groves ?

Would LLA work ?

Or dipping a hot boolit in melted lube and then Gas checking & sizing ?

I think I know what the problem is ( One of them at least )
Just have to figure out how to fix it

without knowing your lube i'd say add some white lith or some atf.

You also have to be absolutely unforgiving in acceptance of good bullets using a magnifying glass as imperfections are greatly magnified with smaller calibers. Attaching a thermometer to the mould and pot paying attention to the temperature and amount of time before you cut the sprue will help alot.

Try lightly coating your boolits with LLA after the gaschecks are seated and then lightly dusting them with motor mica(shake-n-bake in a baggie).

Do not be surprised if you have to run a dry patch through the bore every 20 shots to maintain ultimate accuracy if you go this route. (removes the slight powder fouling that may harm accuracy in shallow rifling)

This is how I had the best accuracy in my 223 H&R with the 225415 and RCBS 22-55-FN at 2.5 to 3K fps.

I recovered some of the boolits I shot for the 22 postal match that were shot into snow.
The lube grooves are still filled with Speed Green. We add an ingredient to make it more tacky so it stays put. Most folks dont like the tackiness for handling reasons but it sure shoots good.

Yes, good. But a soft lube like Felix spins out clean. So both ways work.
That is why I will not use any hard, brittle lube. It has to be one way or the other. I recovered a lot of boolits at the range with lube left in one side. Might as well cast air pockets.
I have been sent test boolits and when I opened the box, half the lube was in the bottom of the box.

2400 fps in an 8" twist is why the lube is spiining off. Had the same problem with the 6.5 Swede with close to the same twist at the same velocity. You've other problems causing the flyers besides the lube.

Probely
But I am trying to eleminate 1 problem at a time

Virgin Lino
One of NOE moulds and only using 1 cavity
Inspecting the boolits 2 times
Weighing each one and sorting out light & heavy

All have reduced my groups

I have some Speed Green and LLA
I will see if they reduce the number of flyers

May mix up a batch of Felix lube to try also

This is sort of my got to get out and shoot , long term project

I missed the 1 in 8 twist part...................good luck. My info was for a 1 in 12 twist barrel.
