I have always wanted to have a 22 Savage high power but so far never got to try one. Read all the old stuff about lions and tigers and bears oh my. Musta realy been sunthin when it first came out and was claimed to be second only to a lightning bolt in killing power. Some hunters of the day did some realy wild stuff with, but then some got squashed and eaten too.
It aint lookin like I am ever gona get my mitts on one with prices on a shootable Savage in a higher orbit than the space shuttle.
I have been messing arround with shooting 22 boolits in 30 cai sabot's and it just dawned on me when I was shooting a contender 30/30 that HAY! this is a high power!!! COOL!
We are too dark now to chrono so I dont know how fast there going but for sure they are going fast. Using the RCBS high power boolit at about 63gn in wqww with a rem 2 1/2 and 30.5gn H4227. If you try it back off a bit cuz its max from my 10" contender and an older H&R 30/30.
With iron sight I can get the contender to put most shots in about 4" at 100.
Anybody wanna chance a guess at velocity? I think origonal loads for the HP were about 3000 with a 70gn. I dont see any loads that come close to 30.5gn h 4227 but this aint no 22 bore eather.
BTW I was able to get 4300 fps from a Ruger 30/06 for about 2 MOA, but that as good as that Ruger ever shot anything. Am working on a trade deal for a Tika 30/06 that I know for a fact will shoot and then we will see.
How bout anybody wanna guess what one of these 63gn wqww boolits will do on game. Sure would like to know how fast there goin. I would think they will hold up as good or better than the jackets made for that cal. As I understand it them 70gn Hornadies come apart perty easy.
Just day dreamin with my fingers here fellas so dont let me bore ya. Down to only a couple hours of shootin time a day now so it goes fast. Thats about 22 hours of dark a day and yall are just gonna have to put up with it till spring.
Maybe by then my spellin will get better, ya think?

Bullshop; you need one of those "light kits" for your chrono, probably a heater too! I'll make a guess 3050 fps, I know you'll get it chronoed when the sun gets a little higher in the sky, what do you figure they're going? I show factory 70 gr load listed at 2800 fps. As for what they would do on game, deer anyway, you probably wouldn't be eating" right up to the hole". For what it is worth, a friend stopped bye a couple days before general season closed, he had filled his tag with a bull early on and bought a second B12 cow tag, filled it while deer hunting- gun used, Ruger 22/250 and 55 Win psp, one thru the lungs, maybe you got your new " moose gun" Har

Bullshop:

The .22 HP Savages are among the easiest 99's to find, though most I have seen (and I have owned three over the years) were the takedown versions. One thing to be aware of is that these were made with the old pre-Hornet 0.228" groove diameter - j-word bullets are just abort impossible to find (they are still used in Europe, though), so keep an eye out for the Ideal #228367 60-gr. pointed gas-check mould that was designed for the .22 HP. Cases are easily bent up out of .25-35's.

Dan,

I know exactly how fast you are going but I better not tell. It will take the anticipation out of it.

Take two lanterns and place one over your shooting bench and one out by the target just back aways. 24 hour a day shooting. It's hell with opens unless you have fire sights, but scopes work like nobody's business. At least that's what I do when I need to burn more daylight literally. Be intelligent where you place the far out lantern or you will need to get a spare.

Bullshop---"Maybe by then my spellin will get better ya think?" Well I reckon it might. I'd bet heavy it gets no worse even if Veral Smith was a tutoring you.

Bullshop....I kinda like them too. I've been saving sizing dies and moulds and maybe one of these days I'll find a shooter.

A shooting acquaitence brings one to the range occasionally. TD model, presentation grade wood and all kinds of checkering. Shoots the RWS ammo in it I think.

I just sit there and drool and wonder what it would do with cast./beagle

When I worked with the 30/06 I didnt get to the speeds it is capable of until I got to much faster powders. I got to 4200 to 4300 fps with Reloader #7 and 4198/2015.
A very weard thing at that speed was that the boolits were making octigon holes in the paper. Thought it might be somthing with dwell time in the paper and the boolit making like a 1/8th turn while passing through?????

Bullshop I have one (1917 TD) that came from a cousin. I waited over 30 years looking for any ammo. S&B now sells loaded ammo. Horniday sells 227 SP boolits. eBay has a 228 mould at auction as I write. "Get the gun" I still have some of his loaded shells with small primers but afraid to shoot them. Carl fed himself for many years using cast boolits. NO I will never SELL it. Bad Water Bill

You can get sabots, seating die to seat bullet in sabot, and some data. Or the kit from the following:

http://www.eabco.com/reload02.html

Online reloading data is at:

http://www.eabco.com/Reports/report04.html

They are a good company to deal with. I have had good dealings with them. Their prices sound like they are in line with what Bullshop mentioned. Also sure they would ship to Our Northern Neighbors.

I have found that if you have a lube sizer you dont need thier seating tool. Just use a .308" die with a top punch that rides the ogive and seat the boolit/bullet squairly to the bottom.
I get good performance with gas check design boolits without the check but not so good with boat tail bullets.

I have one of the rifles, and have not run ammo across my Chronograph, but I find the reported velocity a little hard to believe.

bullet diameter looks to be a little on the small side, listed as .224
