G'day mates,

I'm looking at casting 300gr boolits (lee mould) for metallic silhouette in Australia
I am new to casting (waiting for gear to arrive from the US) Any suggestions for the best alloy for a 460 mag? gas checks? best sources of gear and metal in Oz or US sellers that internationally post?

Also the heaviest projectile available? (i love the muzzle brake but, I want this baby to kick!)

Thanks.

WW water droped from the mould into a 5gallon or larger bucket filled with water or something in the 16 to 20 bhn air cooled .
I would recommed gas checks ! Im gessing your going for over 1200 fps ?
I dont have a 460 S&W , but have done alot of loading for the 454 casull for 14 years .
Try to get your alloy localy the shipping would be very high from the USA .
The heavyest bullet would probely be in the 350 to 400 gr area and would be from a custom made mould.

Thanks, i have scored about 100kg of wheel weights over the last week, about 30% are zinc and iron, I have hand sorted them, my question is how much zinc does it take to ruin a batch of lead? assuming that for some reason i missed one and my melt temp goes over 750f

Don't walk away from it. As the junk floats, skim it off. It's hard to mess up if you are paying attention.

They actually shoot well with just about any load ! but 1 of my pet loads is a LBT 300 grgc lfn wheel weights / water droped from the mould , fed spp, 28 grs of WW296 for 1450 fps , ive shot several 1/2 inch 5 shot groups at 50 yards with a scope from either of my guns.
i have other loads and cast bullet options for my guns but they are usually milder than the one staited. to me a 260 to 300 gr bullet from 1000 to 1100 fps is a good plinker! and i only use 9.0 grs of tightgroup powder to get those results and no gas checks

well AS you said new to casting and NEW to a 460S&W If you are going to drive them so it will KICK you best bet would to use zinc WW they work fine but need to use a steel mold
ONE note you will find out the comp for lead bullets is best left in the box. and use it without one .
remember that gun has a GAIN twist and driveing lead fast dont work

I have been reading the posts about the causes of leading and was wondering how the rifling would affect it, would gcs be enough to stop leading? or do you think the gas would cut to the lube grooves?
