Ok guys here is John Ross's 400gr Alley Cleaner. There is a GC and PB version, Both are based on John Ross's design with a slight mod made for the GC. It will be done in a Cramer mold and working on getting a brass 2 cavity made for it.
The GC version is 3D and will have the Penta and Round HP pins that will be the same as the PB design. Click on the 3D and check out all the different angles and look down the large HP.
Thanks Longbow.

Waiting on the final drawing for the 22 ramset when it is done I will post it here. All the dimensions from these will be the same its just the HP pin will be much larger for the Ramset to fit in.

I think the penta cavity is actually larger in volume, but I may be wrong.
I'll take one 4-cavity PB and one 4-cavity GC. Penta and Ramset pins for each, and a set of flat ones to cast flat nose bullets.
I'll change my order if 4-cav is not going to be available.

I can't edit my posts!
Edited: Ramset pins may not work well in this application, and I'd need to go to a Lyman type single cavity.

Claiming ignorance, what is a 22 ramset? The hp looks very interesting but difficult if not impossible to get off the boolit once cast.

John, did you get the pic of the ramset?? it is going to be loaded nose first or there will be no way to get it off the HP pin, the nose has plenty of material for the rim to sit down inside and have room for epoxy or whatever you want to use to keep it in place. Let me know if I need to send you the 3d of the ramset design.

Just so everyone is aware, the drawings are a first cut. Dimensions can be altered to suit what you want. Let 69daytona know of any changes and we will sort it out. I can't accommodate everyone so we will go with the majority on changes.
I don't have a .500 S&W so I have no opinion here. I am just providing the drawings.
If a larger meplat and/or hollow point or a different nose bore rider diameter is wanted then it is easy to do, just let me know what you want.
What I need to know is what the goal is ~ specific weight or specific dimensions. Whichever rules, the others will be compromises.
As for the .22 hollow point, I used .22 rimfire dimensions for the cavity. I am not sure of the length, but .22 Ramsets used to fit .22 chambers so this should be close. If anyone has .22 Ramsets and can measure I can check/correct the hollow point. I will say that a straight sided cavity that deep may be a problem with a hollow point pin. Even a slight taper may not do it but I am game if you are.

I can go get some to measure tomorrow. We use them at the ski hill for rope launchers. I thought 'exploding' bullets were regulated under the DD statutes?

What I will need is:
- rim diameter
- rim thickness
- body diameter
- overall length
I am pretty sure they are standard cartridge sizes or certainly used to be. I used .22 LR for the cavity so unless they make a .22 mag size that should do it but a confirmation with a real Ramset would be good.
You can post dimensions or PM me with them. Thanks.
You may well be right on "exploding" boolits/bullets being regulated.
Many years ago I tried drilling 500 gr. boolits for .22 LR and shot them out of my .45-70. I didn't find they were any better than regular HP but my testing wasn't very scientific either. Ramsets have a little more poop than regular .22 LR though so that may make a difference.

I will let others to decide hollow point/cavity design but would like to request minor outer dimensional changes as follows;
Increase bore rider diamter from .493" to .495"
Increase meplat from .473" to .475"
I explained the reason for the bigger bore rider a bit in the initial discussion thread but simply state, I like the bore rider to start engaging with the lands a little, instead of just riding over them. I think .495" will be better for this function but still small enough to fit in the chamber throats.
The reason for the bigger meplat is, well..., I just think the number .473" is odd. Let's just make it .475" or call it 95% meplat.
These are really small things but we all know sometimes, small things make big difference...
John, I guess it's your call.

As mentioned, some dimensions control and some are compromises. The reason for the 0.473" meplat was that I decided to fit a nice number of 4.25" for the nose radius. One will be "nice" and one will be a compromise if other dimensions are required.
I can make whatever changes you want but I would like to collect the requested changes then make them all once rather than changing and reposting just to get more changes.
Actually if the bore ride diameter is increased to 0.495" that may just take the meplat out to 0.475" with no other changes. Hmmmm, not often things are that easy!
Is there a specific weight desired like right on 400 grs. or just about 400 grs.? If you want right on 400 grs. then the hollow point is the easiest to alter to make weight changes.
Let me know and I will make it so.
Longbow
As a note, 95% meplat would be 0.477" another odd number.

As long as there is no strong objection, I assume bore ride diameter to be .495" and meplat to be .475".

Is there a specific weight desired like right on 400 grs. or just about 400 grs.?
No. About 400 is fine. Alloy will change this. I want it .900" long with .700" nose and the biggest penta HP possible.

John:
I can make the penta point somewhat larger and still have some "lip" around it. Do you want me to push the limits? I am thinking you might get away with as little as 1/32" or maybe just a hair bigger at the corners. This is such a large boolit that I doubt fillout will be a problem with so much molten mass flowing into the mould.
Again, I had just picked a "nice" number of 0.350" for the diameter inside flats.
If no other changes are requested I will revise the model and drawing to make the meplat 0.475", the bore ride 0.495" and HP larger. I will give it another couple of days.

New drawings with latest changes for the PB and GC versions:
- larger HP opening (about as large as I think you will get away with)
- HP depth changed to 0.600" for PB version to keep weight at ~ 400 grs.
- 0.495" diameter nose bore rider
- 0.475" diameter meplat

Hi Longbow,
You may hate me by now but I'll say this. For the GC version, my preference is just to eliminate the lower skinny driving band and make GC shank length to be around .100" so that both GC and PB will have about the same inside case length of 0.200". The HP design can be the same. Naturally, GC version would be slightly lighter than PB version, but I beleive John's main concern is "inside case length = how much it'll take inside case volume"
Any comment from John and all others who's been interested in this design/GB?
longbow
04-02-2011, 03:57 PM
Porterhouse:
The GC version was specifically for 69daytona and he was concerned about enough bearing surface so I left a small driving band just above the GC.
I can make it look like whatever you guys want it to look like but since it was by request for 69daytona then he should approve the change.
Alternately, I can draw up another to your spec but the group buys might get spread a little thin.
This one doesn't seem to be stirring up much interest yet but then the 700 gr. Grand Canyon buy just ended and the 600 gr. is in progress plus at least one other .50 cal. boolit group buy is running.
I will leave these alone for now but you guys decide what you want and I guess John and Jack have the final say. I will make whatever changes are chosen in the end.

I dont mind the change to the GC version Kent. the GCs fit nice and tight on the 700s and I know this one has the same shank size so there wont be any GCs falling off.
Go ahead and make the change so both PB and GC versions are as close as possible.

Okay, latest revisions to make gas check version same weight as PB version.
Re-posted both so there is no confusion and also a new 3D assembly with gas check.
Just left click on the pdf image to open the 3D.
By adjusting the hollow point side angles a little I got both to be just over 400 grs. calculated weight using wheelweights. The GC version now has a slightly larger hollow point.

69daytona
04-17-2011, 06:17 PM
This is the same style penta design as the 700 and as long as the pins are hot enough they fill out perfectly.
longbow
04-20-2011, 04:19 PM
Actually, this one has thinner nose wall than the 700 gr. design. It started out the same but John wanted thinner so thinner it is.
I suspect that with the size of the mould and mass of lead being poured in, fillout will be okay as long as the pins are hot as Jack says.
I could always add a couple of different pins in penta and/or round too so if this one is a problem for fillout then it is only a set of pins to be replaced. They aren't expensive.
You guys let me know what you want.

Uh OK.
I like experimenting and even have made my own incendiary .22 ammo using lighter flints. The S&W 500 round as a long range bullet would benefit from tracer ammo options for both revolver and rifle. The reason that the Alley Cleaner has been designed with a large hollow point is to put stuff in it... whether shot or incendiary material. Maybe you should read the thread before you criticize a post.
But I won't take up any more time in this thread since I have so much to learn.

It's not ridiculous at all. Its a design that pushes the limits and will fill a particular niche that some of us like toying with.
This is NOT a hunting bullet. If you want the "hammer of Thor", you should have gotten in on the 700 grain monster Miha cut. I believe there are still a couple available if you are interested.

I did get the 700 gr that miha cut and also bought some of the ranger rick designs and i dont know how many of these that you have shot but I have problems with this boolit keyholing at longer ranges with the 18 to 1 twist barrel. I was hoping that the ross 500 with its 10 to 1 twist will help this problem. Large meplat boolits are in fact a shorter range hunting boolit and I dont know how many deer or other big game you have killed with the 500 but a hollowpoint does not work well on real flesh and bone targets. What you want is a solid to go all the way through and make them leak. If you understand anything about ballistic coeffientcy what you want is one of ross's design with the smaller meplat. I was just looking for a lighter weight large meplat boolit for hunting and not a stuffed burrito.

What are your experiences with the 700 gr boolit and please explain why the "Alley Cleaner is not a hunting boolit". It is definatly not a long range boolit as you claim. I would like to hear your thoughts on this boolit development. It looks like you are looking for a high priced novelty mold which may or may not work as I see this as a mold with fillout problems and too frangible of a tip for a cast boolit. It would probably work if it was a jacketed bullet.I just dont want to spend the money on something that that may require grinding and refitting the pins when they could be made right in the first place.
69daytona
05-03-2011, 11:05 AM
The Alley Cleaner is not designed for hunting, it it a personal protection boolit designed to stop any would be aggressor in his or her tracks. now as a solid it would make a great pig boolit and they are good for 200 yards or more in the right gun with the right shooter.
The 700gr HP with the HP broke away is still a 350gr boolit so even on big game you have a heavy slug to keep going through, plus the hole on impact will let its heart drop out.
wilddog45
05-03-2011, 02:23 PM
So the alley cleaner is not a hunting boolit but would make a great pig boolit. Does anyone here actually read there posts before hitting the button? Then you go on to say it was designed to stop an aggresser in its tracks. Are you talking about a human aggresor or or an animal aggressor? I dont know how many people you shoot on a daily basis but I look at this as a down sized 700 gr for hunting. I talked to John Ross today and I think he has reconsidered on making the penta pins and the hollow points smaller as originally intinded. To me hollow points are for self defence and I have found out from actual experience that cast solids work the best for me in a real world hunting situation, although I have never shot anyone with with a cast boolit. Maybe someone can share there experience on what a cast boolit does on human flesh. But i like what works for my purposes

We are going to drop the Ramset pins and just go with a wide HP pin set like what John Ross wants and then the original size which is the same width as the 700gr which has been tried and proven to work.
I am sure the wide pins John wants will work, Just have to make sure the pins get good and hot. The extra pins are $8 per set so it shouldn't make anyone go broke. Let me know what you think.
Miha must be real busy as I have not heard back from him since we submitted this design.

^^^^me too.,
Also I was wondering, would anyone be interested in turning this into something like the quinta weight design? or is that even possible? having the same nose and HP pins but having a variety of weights available, using the same tooling. I would be down for at least one more if we could do that.

A Quintaweight "Alley Cleaner" may be an interesting idea because not only with the different hollowpoint pins available you would also have the flatpoint pins and have a whole series of different nose options and be able to possibly mix and match hollowpoints with a matching weight in a shorter solid. You could carry a combination of H.P. and F.P. in close to the same weight and velocity and not worry about sight settings. Just a thought .

Sorry for the wait guys but this is what we have been waiting on. I tried to keep the different HP pins like everyone wants, one Penta pin as large as will cast very good with good fill.
The different round HP pins are one that will cast perfect and the other as John requested pushed to the limit I think will still cast and fill in good. all the bases of the HP pins have been flatend to different degrees to try to make all the boolits cast as close to the same weight as possible, The GC was taken into consideration.
I will get these sent into Miha next Friday if there are no other mods needed.

I sent the drawings to Miha today.
There is one slight change to the GC version. They will be approximately 418 grs. due to the gas check.
Originally I had set out to make both the PB and GC versions 400 grs. Since John had certain design criteria he wanted, I did not have much to play with so slightly altered the penta HP in the GC version to get both weights at 400 grs. However, when 3 more pins were requested it was a bit much so sort out without either altering John's design some or just accepting that the GC version would be slightly heavier.
I went with slightly heavier since I figured the GC version would get loaded hotter anyway so wouldn't be shooting to same point of impact as the PB and they are only about 5% heavier.

well I think I am interested, though I am having trouble finding a dimensioned drawing of the final design ? the only thing I am worried about is the crimp to nose dimension as I need to keep it to Magazine length. So we are saying this one WOULD work in a BEO?
And looking at the rev4 drawing, this one will be too long ( for my mags anyway ) by about 1/10"

Reliable feed would be dependent on the mags, if you can get it to " nose up" enough it should work, but as I said with standard trim brass and the as drawn nose to crimp it wont fit the mags anyway.

I've had good results with icewater quenched WW alloy, sized .500" and lubed with NRA formula. This has taken me to over 1800 FPS with standard twist guns. Above that, and above 1600 FPS in 1:10" twist guns, I use a disc of something under the base of the bullet. LDPE works well but even milk cartons help.
I'm almost out of the 5 gallon batch of 50/50 lube I made up in the '70s so one of the more modern choices available now like Carnauba Red or a Moly blend may work even better.

What I understand is that the four cavity is not possible due to the fact that when he ran a sample, the blocks warped. Of the materials that molds are made of, brass is supposedly the most succeptable to this. I appreciate that he did the work to figured this out before sending out the molds. A four cavity of this size is new territory for Mihec, so it is not surprising if he runs into some snags.
I believe all Mihec is trying to do is give the people who don't want a two cavity instead of a four cavity the opportunity to let him know that so he doesn't get saddled with too many extras.

Sparticus, you said you dropped out of this buy so further comments from you are unwarrented. Miha just started up his own shop so I can understand what he is going through. Especially in Slovinia.
This sounds like an interesting mould to me and I'll wait until completion. With the incredibly thin nose and large shanks there are bound to be problems to be worked out. The price is right and I don't have to pay anything until a working mould is generated and ready to be shipping to me. My money's earning interest someplace until then. Miha, keep up the good work and I'll buy when it's ready.
Please ignore the doomsayers who have never made anything.

Thanks for hanging in there for this one but those of you that have shot the 700gr HP at 900fps or under and recovered the nice mushroom will see the value of this boolit for self defense or when you need something on the ground quick.
This will be a monster with soft cast between 700-900fps out of the 4" or those of you lucky enough to have one of John Ross's 5"

May I know why is the base .502"?
Why not .501"? Was this design done for a specific SW500?
happy7
07-18-2012, 05:49 AM
If you want a 501 bullet, it is better to have the bullets drop at 502 so you can size to 501. Cast bullets are rarely round. This way you can get a good sized bullet that will not be undersize.
IllinoisCoyoteHunter
07-18-2012, 05:50 AM
Cast a touch big so that they can be sized down to the size you wish. Sizing also takes any out-of-roundness out of the bullet, assuming your sizer die is round.
EDIT: Happy, I think we responded at exactly the same time. Is there an echo in here?????

Anyone else interested in this one?? We have just enough to get it produced, Thought it would be of more interest to the Beowolf and 50AE people.
Estimated cost? Or, has is this a done deal?

The nose is still .700 or has that been changed? I didn't think that would fit the throat of a beuwolf or a 50 ae.

This one still has the 700 nose, very slight mods to the thickness at the rim and depth of the HP but that is about it, it was designed for quick max expansion.

I am not being sarcastic but is Miha even producing molds? I know he was getting set up in his new shop but does anyone know if he is up and running??? Haven't heard any updates lately and was just curious. I know the molds will be worth the wait.

I got a PayPal invoice for a group buy from him about two weeks ago, and people are using the molds that showed up.

Just got an email from Miha today and the 400gr is on the machine now. He said you should start looking for invoices in about 7-10 days.
I will get the list updated and fixed today. Been buying some old cars and lost track.
My new cars are a 31 model A 5 window coupe and a 32 Buick 5 window coupe with straight 8.
Now all I need is a Thompson.

Now boys, I am looking forward to postings with pictures of expanded boolits and destroyed expansion media!!!!! Videos are even better!
Round holes and nice groups in paper are fine for some but I do like a scene of destruction!
Makes me wish I had something chambered in .500 S&W!
Looking forward to your results.
Happy shooting!
