Today is Georgia's turkey opening and I was fortunate to bag a nice gobbler at 0830. I had a group of 4 toms coming on a string to my slate call. 1 3/4 oz of #4s out of my 870 did the trick. I didn't weigh him, but it had an 11" beard. One down and two to go.

Good start of spring! Our season doesn't open for a couple weeks yet. A buddy and I will be hunting them with flintlock fowlers.

Well Done RugerFan! Like Waksupi, KY's season doesn't open until April 16th and spring has been slow in coming around here. Woke up to 1/2" of snow this AM and 33 degrees; winter just won't let go. KY has an estimated population of 225,000 birds. The spring season for 2010 produced a record harvest of 36,097 birds. I do not recall the fall season's numbers. If you ever get up around here to hunt this year, we have a large population of 3-4 yr old birds weighing in at 24 lbs+. I can already taste some Wild Turkey Salad with grapes, pecans, mayo/mustard, paprika, and celery.
www.fw.ky.gov for information on hunting KY. Oh, and don't forget to apply for the Elk hunts this fall.
Many Thanks for your Service and Sacrifice to this Great Nation.
Cheers,
Got-R-Did.

Good bird, Ruger. Our season opens Saturday the 2nd. Glad to see somebody besides me uses #4 shot. I shoot 3" Win. What length spurs did he have?

I'm shooting Win 3" as well (I do reload 12 ga, but decided to let factory ammo to the heavy work). The spurs were only 1 1/4". Let us know how you do. I'm hoping to fill 2 more tags and maybe guide my boy to one on the rare occasion he gets home from college. :Fire:

As I was out walking the fields this afternoon I ran into a whole herd of 'em in the back field . I spotted two toms out strutting in the open , might have been another in the woods . I heard another calling in the woods and thought it might have been a hunter but eventually all the birds went into the woods and didn't hear any shooting . Of course I don't even know if it's shootin' season for them around here .

Jack some people actually use a bow for turkey hunting. you might not hear that they are kinda quiet.

I bumped my head and have decided to attempt to take my bird with my own handmade equipment. Stone point, dogwood shoot arrow, and a self bow I made from hickory..........I am gonna need some really good luck this year :groner:

I didn't think of that Maximum . Now that you mention it the neighbor is into the arrow thing .

Even though I don't hunt turkeys I do kinda like watchin' them and seeing nice birds others get .

RugerFan, 1 1/4" spurs is probably a 4 yr. old bird. I've always heard 1" spurs are at least 3 yrs. old. Your bird is a good'un.

Congrats, my wife and I were on the front porch the other day and a large wild gobbler came running down the sidewalk. We live in town not 4 blocks from downtown. It was quite a shock to see such a large bird running down the sidewalk.
