View Full Version : I don't cast........need bullets!

I've got enough hobbies in my life.........I keep looking at getting involved with hand casting boolits.........but I resist.

I shoot 45-70 and 45LC. I've been buying Cast Performance, Beartooth, and ProShootPro gas checked, hard cast bullets. All perform great on paper and steel and the Cast Performance are devastating on game. (Not that the others aren't, but I've not had an opportunity to try the others on game.)

But I shoot a lot and these boolitts all cost a few nickles.......

Where is a good place to source "plinking" boolits in 300-325gr .458" and 250gr in .452"

Are any of the vendors on this list timely with their deliveries and products of sufficient quality?

Thanks in advance!

There is no real good source of cheap plinking Bullseye, except YOU.
Stop resisting and start casting. Sadly, you came to a site inhabited by people who can't resist doing everything for themselves.
If you want good bullets, try Bullshop. I have heard very good things snout his products.

Thanks Brad........You know as well as I that my post is just a fained attempt at not getting into casting............

I wouldn't be here if I wasn't very interested in all the neat gadgets you folks get to play with in making your boolits.

But summer is coming and motorcycles and fishing poles are calling..........along with lots of shooting. So a new hobby will wait until the leaves fall again.

I'll be shopping around for someone getting out of the hobby and try to purchase a bunch of stuff I'll need all at once.

Chicken fat? Oh! You mean for treating burns from splashing lead.
Let's hope you don't need much of that.

ill just throw this out, dont take it as you must, lee 10# pot, lee 6 cavity mold, lee sizer and LLA, lead ingots. spend 2 hours casting boolits and you will have a few hundred in that time frame.

sort the good from bad, tumble lube- 30 minutes to an hour.

next day spend an hour or so, depends how fast you are, size and relube, next day or so load rounds.

this is how i do it. casting and reloading does take time but its not were you must dedicate an entire day to it or week to it.

I don't really call casting a hobby for me, it is more of an addiction.

Any vendors on this list are dependable, or they are not allowed to list here. We are rather harsh on anyone doing any bad deals here.

With a healthy attitude, many enjoy the challenges and rewards casting and loading more than shooting. I am one of those. I have on order a CheckMaker, so I will be making gas checks soon and am excited about that.

rbertalotto,

The 45-70 and 45lc are the easiest and most fun to cast for.

Of course the wife says that i think they are all fun...

Go to the X-Treme bullets web site. They sell both plated and cast. You will find .452 at $63.50 per 500 or $127.00 per thousand. .458 300 gr. RNFP at $74.00 per 500 and $149.00 per thousand. The price listed also includes shipping.

I have used their plated and cast bullets for IDPA match shooting and they put out a very good product. I prefer their plated over other brands I have used in the past and I get top grade accuracy out of their .452 230 gr. cast and plated in my match 45 acp.

Probably like casting darn near as much as shooting, and putting your own boolit in a casing and it goes bang the way you planned, that's my casting junkie high.......................steg

do not forget to slug your barrels, so you can size the boolits appropriatly. shooting boolits that are to small will make an ugly mess in your barrels. my 45/70 requires boolits sized to .460" to shoot well.

"I've got enough hobbies in my life........."

Yeah,,,,,I thought the same. But soon came to realize I had time for one more.
(It really don't take all that long to cast a bunch!!!!)
Only wished I had realized it sooner!

One better - when you have a clean harvest of a game animal - for me that is elk and a 45/90

go to this site http://www.lasc.us/Fryxell_Book_Contents.htm . Once you have read this you will be as smart as most on our forum

As far as not having enough time, all you need is some time management. I suggest you fish and shoot during the day. You can cast and load during the night. It is a lot cooler at night, anyway. (who needs sleep?):drinks:

Speaking of burns earlier...I learned long ago that Milk of Magnesia does wonders for burns whether from lead, the stove, or from the sun. Try it-takes the sting away.

I dont know of ANYTHING more fun than driving stock cars door to door and bumper to bumper wide open on the track.

But I gave that up so I had more money for casting and shooting.:cbpour:

...........If time is a factor, you merely bury the TV out in the back yard, or give it to Salvation Army as a tax writeoff. If you're like my daughter's FIL you'll end up with about 60 freed up hours a week :-)

So for the about cost of 1K 300gr RNFP's you can get a Lee 20lb bottom pour, a couple of molds and a couple of Lee sizer dies, a can of JPW, mineral spirits and have enough left over to get some lead, probably at least enough to make 1K of your own.

Ok-OK-OK!!!!

I got it!....Television is buried in the back yard.......A space was made in the machine shop to set up the equipment. A call went out to anyone that might have casting equipment for 45-70 and 45LC that they want to sell.

A fellow sent me an email this AM that he is sending me, for free, a brand new bottom pour furnace.............He couldn't stand the fact that I wasn't casting my own...

So I need a couple moulds and such............460" for the 45-70 and .452 for the 45LC......Tongs, sizing dies, etc............

What do you have for sale?

IMHO - Ranch Dog has a real good shooting mould in the 350 grain range that shoots real good. Marlin GG first eddition (ported)

03-22-2011, 12:43 PM
From all the research I've done it seems you are correct. He has .460" moulds that will fit the bill.......Before I order new moulds I'm going to wait and see if someone has something they want to sell that needs "recycling"......

For pistol bullets I have found that Dardas has very high quality and reasonable prices. He will combine orders and has an attractive price break at 10,000.

10,000 is not a lot of bullets.

I have better things to do than cast bullets for "plinking" use. But, if I was not employed, my perspective would likely change.

Casting is to be done during the winter, unless you ice-fish, then can be done at night.
Ya pour out as much as you can, when there is little else to do. It's like lubin' and loadin', but harder to set up. When I was in Alaska, I cast all winter, not straight through, but when there was little else, and that's much of the time...When you're not snowmobilin' (or ice-fishin') or huntin'.
I pity those guys that live where it stays warm in the winter. I live in Nevada now, and am still able to produce in spurts during the inclement weather.
I'm NOT addicted...I'm NOT...I'm NOT!!! I can quit whenever I want!!! I just haven't wanted to for the last 40 years!!!lol
Have fun,
Gene
