well as everyone on here is aware by now, i have a new rossi 44 mag lever action, i have the 240 grain LRN that does NOT take a gas check, its good for plinking and GOOD accuracy with only 6.2 grain of titegroup it is a nice very mild plinking load, now im wanting a hunting load something i can really push with a gas check to around 1800 FPS. im thinking, should i get the 310 flat nose gas check, or should i get the 240 SWC gas check

here they are

The 310

the 240

i want this for hunting in Kentucky, where the closest shot could be 10 yards and the furthest MAYBE 200 yards with the hills and trees, so what should i get to all you experienced boolit casters i need your help, thanks.

ps i will be using straight wheel weights if that helps

Ranch Dog 265 was designed from the ground up for hunting.

Given your two choices, I would go with the 310 because it has a wider meplat.

what is the meplat? and what does it do?

The meplat is the surface area on the front of the bullet.

Wider meplat by design is supposed to transfer the energy from the bullet to the animal. Wider meplat=bigger wound channel.

I have both of those moulds. Both are good designs, but if you really want to get 1800 fps, you're going to have to use the lighter boolit......and then it's going to be a stretch.

The 240 grain bullet might work rather well on deer.

good meplat

MOST meplat

the velocity you want you will need a light boolit.

the distance you want will be very difficult as 44's tend to drop quickly. Lots of practice will be involved and a range finder will help!

Any boolit with a meplat close to the middle one above will suit you well.

The flat part of the nose is the meplat and that is what does the damage you want for quick kills.

well thats why i shoot cast boolits so i can get LOTS of pratice, i just need a boolit that will get the job done on some white tail here
and that i can shoot stout loads with out the fear of the rounds going off in my tube...

You will be able to get 1500fps out of that 310gr Lee, should do what you want.

I've used them on pigs from my 96/44 and cast ouf of air cooled clip on WW's they will expand. Mine end up 315gr ready to fly.

Either one should work fine for deer hunting

....especially in a lever action

Link23 how do loooonng boolits work in your Rossi? Per Lyman's 49th manual max. COL is 1.610" All cast loads listed in the manual exceed that length. Some as long as 1.710" . These cause no problem in my revolvers but may be a problem in a rifle. Before you make a major investment in molds you may want to beg, borrow or buy a few rounds to see if the will cycle through your gun.
1800fps with a 300 gr boolit is quite HOT! You will probably have to drop down to around 240 gr to get 1800fps with out exceeding pressure standards. While I really like the 44 Mag it is not a 200 yd cartridge. Do not have ballistic table at hand but from memory out to 150 yds drop is not too bad then it increases rapidly.
Drove through Kentucky last fall on I-75 and saw lots of deer that didn't make it across the road. Good luck hunting.
If you can't find any gas checked boolits to try out send me a PM , a small flat rate box is not too expensive.

First, what is the twist rate of the Rossi? You might be barking at the moon with 200 yards, even 100 yards.
Then we don't know what your boolit looks like.
You can shoot a non gas check boolit faster by making it harder and tougher.
1800 fps is not good at close range with hard boolits but works better at long range.
My feeling is you are trying for too much.

SWCs wont feed in my Puma, just a tad too long. I could prolly make them work, but I've found a better bullet; Ranchdog 265 gr. GC. Feeds great in my Puma and shoots great in all my .44s. If I hunted with my .44s, this would be my first choice.
