After trying several boolit designs it's becoming apparent my Pre-64 M70 in 30-'06 with its generous dimensions in the neck area and kinda tapered throat (.310-.311) likes bore riders measuring .301" to .302" on the nose. I've also had some decent results with RCBS 30-165-SIL at this velocity level but the c309-170 has produced the best group so far.

The load was 22 grains of surplus 4759 and the velocity average for 7 shots was 1852 fps. The two foulers were not shot at this target. Boolit weight was 181 grains fully dressed and the alloy registered between 13 and 14 on the Lee scale (probably closer to 14 than 13). A bit more experimenting and this load's gonna be tested at 150 yards.

5 rounds, 75 yards:

Should have mentioned that the boolits were heat treated at 420F for an hour and quenched in ice water. My heavier than WW alloy is more like BHN 12 a couple weeks after casting when just air cooled.

I was wondering how you were making out with that '06. Looking good!:drinks:

Thanks...

And thank you, Excess... I've shot all but the heavy SAECO's you sent me and it turns out the cheap lil' Lee design is the best fit so far. Some chamberings just do better with a bore ridding design that slightly engraves the rifling.

I didn't get a chance to repeat the above results today because of weather... perhaps I'll get a chance Wednesday. That low shot really bugs me so I've gotta try to tighten up the group!

BTW, has anyone tried to use RCBS 550 or 560 top punches with the Lee 170 boolit? I've got a 565 that I bought with my RCBS 35-200 but it distorts my softer alloy in the ogive/meplat area.

I've used it in everything from 30/30 to .300WM with excellent results.
