I hate these cataracts.

I just cannot see the target and the sights anymore.

Yesterday it was a super nice day so retired to the backyard range to test some 32 H&R mag. loads with WW231 and RCBS cast 98 gn SWC.

Only took one of my 32 Rugers, a favorite 4 5/8" Single Six, iron sited.

Groups terrible, struggled with seeing the target and sites, groups averaged four to five inches from 25 yds.

Another nice day today, so thought I would get more accurate results from my 5 12" Bisley Single Six, 'cause it has a 2X Burris scope on it.

Took it outside and fired a group from the same reloading session, same load, different gun, got a very nice group and didn't have to struggle with seeing the sights or target.

Guess I am going to be reduced to shooting only scope sited handguns until I can get these cataracts fixed. :-(

Group that is marked on target is from yesterday, small group from today.

That is an excellent boolit! I use that one over way too much Universal.
I fell in love with these Rugers and the .32 not that long ago. I picked up a Marlin in .32 H&R and it spits that RCBS SWC out like a ray gun.

Olevern, I really do understand. My cataracts are nowhere near mature enough to get them removed, but they sure do hamper my shooting. I was at the range today, practicing for the Cowboy action shoot on Sunday morning. I was having a devil of a time seeing the front sight on my Uberti 45 Colt and the Uberti 1873 in 45 Colt. I even shot my wife's 32-20 and did not do much better. Of course, you can throw rocks at the range that we compete at. Maybe I will just show up with a bag full of rocks instead of guns for the next competition....[smilie=b:

Hogokansatsukan,
nice rig you got there. I too have a Marlin cowboy in 32 H&R mag. and love it.

lbaize3,
My cataracts are also not mature, according to my eye doc. I've known about them for three years now, and all they do is track them and increase my distance prescription. Doesn't help my shooting. Guess me and my collection of scoped Contenders are going to get to know each other a little better. If not.....I'll join you in throwing rocks.

I don't have cataracts but I am old enough that I can sure tell the difference in focusing on iron sights in the morning and later in the day. Early evening seems to be when I usually have time to get a little shooting in. It is really starting to tick me off but what can you do?
I have had handguns with scopes in the past (I have sold all but one) but never really liked the way they made the gun feel in my hands or the added bulk while carring them afield. I have resisted going to optics but I may have to rethink this.

I have had cataracts removed on both eyes (lens implants installed, of course). I discovered glaucoma in the right eye (cataract masked the glaucoma until I pretty much lost most of my vision in that eye).

I tried a Red Dot sight on one of my handguns. Now, I have a dozen of them on various handguns and am shooting as well as ever. They have been near magical for me.

I still have a couple of scoped handguns, also and can use them with excellent results (using my left eye).

The advantage of the Red Dot sights is they are much less bulky and much lighter than a scope.

Good luck in whatever way you decide to go.

The merritt disks really sharpen the sights up for me. I bought one about a month ago and can now shoot open sights easily. Still can't hit anything but that's another story.

Billwnr, do the merrit disks work thru cataracts?

you might need a seeing eye dog to help with the cataracts. Or maybe a bunch of light on the target to get it illuminated enough. The extra light may be enough but the merrit disks really sharpen things up. Makes it like shooting at age 25 again.

My astigmatism doesn't let me do open sights real good. I still shoot them but, I've always worn glasses. Those are some real fine Rugers you have, must be joy to shoot. Yesterday, I test fired the frame I had color case hardened. I knew it wouldn't effect accuracy but, you know how a guy just naturally follows things up for measure. It knocked down a ram at 100 meters. I had to get behind the building, too much cold wind. Shot 10 rounds and left it at that.

You can guess that I'm real proud of the case hardening job done by Jim Green at Down East Gun Works (vendor sponsor here). I shoot the same 98 grain RCBS in 32 mag and 32-20. When I get serious, I get out the 32-20 with scope. No shame to shooting a scope, it may just be a tad more difficult.

I'm the proud owner of a new Ruger 44 special flattop but, I'm still in love with my 41 Magnum NMBH. Shot that one yesterday too. I've met a few men that shoot open sights or iron sights better than scopes, just not many.

I have a couple of others (a custom TC barrel by SSK in .32 H&R and a Model 30 S&W snub nose in .32 S&W Long) but have no pictures of them.

.32's forever!!:guntootsmiley:

Nice 32's,
I have three single six's, one S&W 631/4inch and one S$W 30/3 inch in handguns and a 32-20 Marlin lever plus a 32 H&R Marlin cowboy. (I think that's all) Oh, yeah, I have a new S&W 327 Blackhawk I haven't shot yet (waiting to get a scope on it).
