View Full Version : undersized nose short body working?

I am shooting a 6mm cast for the first time.I had a few bullets from the SAECO #243 mold given to me that measure .244 x .238 on the nose and lightly engraves in the throat..Accuracy is pretty good for starts( 3/4" to 1.5") for 5 shots groups at 100 yards out of a stock Ruger #1B.I also have a an Eagan MX2 243 that has a super short .243 dia body and .235 nose that doesn't come close to reaching rifling.Alloy is WW and stereotype at a BHN of 18-20.The Eagan so far is shooting about as good as the SAECO.I cant see the bullets bumping up and there is practically no body to guide the bullet. The velocity is a chronographed 1775 fps. with a load of 5744(old) and WLP primers.

It goes against conventional wisdom.

Ideas?

The boolit is aligning properly enough for the same accuracy as the Saeco. Might not happen if the boolit were kicked harder. ... felix

my general feeling also.I have shot many 30 calibers with .296 and such noses at low velocity with good results. The 245497 95 loverin with its full riding body shoot like a pile of doo-doo.

Yeah, Harry, your "wadcutter" should shoot just as well (short range) if alignment is maintained upon bolt closure through ignition. ... felix

Actually the PB undersized nose 30's often hold fine to 200 assuming there is easily read wind conditions. While not jacketed accuracy 10 shots into 3.5" @ 200 is often seen in sporter rifles. But those bullets have bodies about 1/2 the length of the bullet and are really wadcutters like you said. The SAECO #243 the bullet is almost all undersized nose.

Sometimes things just can't be explained. I have a .35 cal. mold that measures only .245" on the largest part of the nose but, my .358 Win. will cluster them into an inch and three quarters @ 100 while producing 1900 fps. I don't know why!

I'm with Uncle Felix on the alignment thing contributing to your good results. On the Loverin, IME they tend to be among the best shooting boolits as velocity increases. I would look at the basics with that boolit and also at the lube capacity. Too many good shooters here report better accuracy with Loverins with only 1 or 2 grooves lubed for it to be a fluke.

Just because someone says it won't work, doesn't make it a hard fast rule. The gun is the ultimate indicator of what works!

i agree 100%

That's why we need to sometimes throw common conceptions out the door and just shoot.I am off tomorrow to shoot some more of the load.it may have been a fluke and i intend to find out.
