large rifle vs. large pistol primers = speed difference?

anyone make a switch from large rifle to large pistol primes for their cast bullet reloads???? did you note a change is bullet speed change going to the large pistol primers????

Depends on just too much. Case size, pressures, powders, boolit and on and on.
Velocity changes mean little anyway, it is accuracy changes you should look for. Some calibers need the LR primer for safety and sure ignition.
Better if you tell what you are shooting.

shooting a 308win., 180 grain lee bullet, 18.0 grains of alliant 2400, speed is 1725fps, using a winchester large rifle primer. this loads = 1 inch group at 50 yards.

will not have a chance to check speed with pistol primers for the next several weeks. hope someone could answer my question.

The closest I reload is a 7.65 Argentine and I use L/P primers. I have noticed that with Red Dot and Unique I get more verticle stringing with L/R primers. With 2400 I use L/R primers as it seems to give me a more complete burn.

I did this some time back in my 7x57 more because I had 3k of LP primers on hand. My load of 39gn H4350 under a 160gn GC with WLR primers ran at 2415fps and gave me 1 1/4 - 1 1/2 in at 100yds. and the same load with a CCI LP primer was on average 18fps slower and a 1/2 in larger groups. Got rid of the LP primers and stayed with the LR.

I haven't done comparative velocity testing so take my theories here FWIW;
I think whether one is better using pistol primers vs rifle primers depends a lot on what powder you're using. Powders like Unique & Red Dot light pretty easy, 2400 not so easy and stuff like 4350 is definitly a rifle powder.
When I'm using Unique, even in big rifle cases I tend to ignite with pistol primers.

And I wasn't using Red Dot then but am using a lot of it now that I no longer have the pistol primers. Ahh well thats the way it goes sometimes.

Same boat as Von Gruff a while back - ran out of LRs. So far, the LPs are ~5% slower, slightly better s.d.'s and a little better accuracy with Unique and Herco loads in a '06. I don't plan on staying with the LPs though.

The caps are thicker on rifle primers. Many rifles have a free floating fireing pin so be very cautious if you use pistol primers with those rifle's. I considered using pistol primers for my 300 Whisper loads but ruled that out quickly.

I'm not sure what you mean, a little more infor would help. I really don't think you mean "don't know why they sell loading books". I really think you were being facetious.
