Today I cast some H&G #86 .30 caliber boolits, using 50% pure lead and 50% linotype. I noticed immediately that they were very hard, I couldn't scratch them with a thumbnail. When I was done, I cast a few thin ingots for hardness testing. My Lee tester shows they are 20 BHN.

The linotype is still in the letter form, and I've tested these in the past at anywhere from 21 to 24 BHN. I've also tested ingots of this same linotype that I had smelted, and it's 21 to 22 BHN. The pure lead was also tested, and was off the low scale for the Lee, but I call it 5 BHN. You would think that a 50/50 combination of these two would end up at around 13 to 14 BHN.

Have any of you used such a mix and then tested the hardness?

Yeah, it makes 92-6-2 alloy, same as Taracorp Magnum Bullet Metal. Usually tests at ~18 BHN.
