HI,
I only cast in winter, when its, cold & snow is here.
You get harder bullets , air cooled or water dropped that way.
0*to40* or so is best.

Hey, if you live where you have real Winters and don't have a temporary/seasonal heated casting shed thrown together, that's you own dang fault! I'd have me at least a 4x6 shed built beside the house with a couple of 110 circuits run to it, one for the pot and one for the heater!

You'll learn to store your stash inside the garage.

Last I looked it was about 69 deg balmy here in northern Wisconsin, that's what I have my thermostat set on.

I did cut across the lake today, short cut home, ice is still gaining on the lake 2.5'-3.5' thick, if this cold weather keeps up, it will hit 4 feet thick. I think it is a temporary county hwy now.

You call that winter weather? When I lived in Canada, I remember seeing 40 foot high snow banks...in June. There's a reason that I don't live up there any more.

I think it is only about 75 next to the wood stove, we have been gone all day so the temp dropped down from 88 or so. Heck with another wood stove in the garage it gets up to the high 60's even though it is uninsulated.

Well fellows, we in NC experienced a record cold Jan. The last part of 2010 was frigid also, but Feb. has so far been balmy. So far this month there have been 6 days in the 70s and one 80. Most of the rest have been in the 60s.
I'm sure there were roads leaving the refrigerator last fall and it ain't no surprise that it gets cold and snows up there. Why didn't ya come on down where Winter is short and bearable.
Tee Hee
Just kidding, I have also put off smelting and moved my casting indoors to a raised fireplace.
At 69 I don't tolerate the cold while sitting for long periods. Arthur and the Itis brothers have taken a toll on me.
The Ground Hog came out before sunrise to a cloudy sky, and Proclaimed an early end to the snow and cold nonsense. I sure hope he's right for a change.

Don't you Southern Boys ever get tired of the same weather day in an day out. Us Swedes need variety in our life. Although I will have to admit that anything below 0 slows life a Bit.

I've lived at this address for over 30 years. I only had a one car unheated garage until four years ago. I built a 3 1/2 car attached garage to the house. It's heated and air conditioned. 2/3 of it is covered in floor tile and lights everywhere. I have a 6x12 room in there for casting and loading. It has its own roll up door so I can lock everything away when I want. It took a long time to get but I really appreciate having it now. There's a TV in the garage but I have it so I can't see it from the reloading room. I would like to have it in the casting room but I can imagine what would happen if while filling a mold, Kyle Bush spins out Junior. Better keep the TV out of sight.

Look at the track rollers on the door... That is inside the garage. What he has to do is learn to close the door. [smilie=l:

The door was closed!!

The latest storm with high winds blew the snow around the closed door.

We have that problem here in eastern CO. If a building isn't "hermetically" sealed ,the wind out here will blow a bigger drift inside the shed almost than outside.

It ain't frigid here like it gets in Canada and the northern tier of states, but I wouldn't call it "California balmy" either. Days in 30s and 40s with 30-50 MPH winds aren't real pleasant to be out in, and forget about shooting paper. Not real bad for casting, though.

I will take the winter up north here any day over the 80% humidity you all see in the east and south. I would rather never see the sun again than have a humid day. I can warm up on the inside all I want, just add another log to the stove and relax.

If you plug in a heater around here you won't have any money left for shooting. :D :D

Well it's Presidents Day and if Obama comes out of the white house and sees his shadow we'll have two more years of unemployment.

Why do you keep your lead in a walk in freezer? Granted it gets warm out in the garage this time of year, but I'd be happy with an air conditioner. Oh well, I guess that I'll just have to settle for the ceiling fan that's over my bench.

Ya know I don't mind the snow and cold ,I don't mind the heat, but when I go to work and see 8* Monday morning and hit 60* Tuesday afternoon and have to shovel snow on Friday ,I get a little cranky. Ya gotta love the eastern slope of the Sierrias. Why already today I've seen snow, rain, sunshine, dead still and 10-20 gusting 40.

Mostly sunny 50*expecting 1-3" of snow in the next 24hrs. Don't like the weather give it a half an hour.

I'm sure glad we left Ridgecrest when I was 10 ,I hate the wind, especially when it blows from the south for 3 days then from the north for 3 days, like it blew up a canyon and washed back out.

its mid 80's here. cant cast at all during the summer, you would die of heat stroke.

I don't have a problem casting in the Summer heat, but smelting is an entirely different matter. I have a raised fireplace in the basement that serves as a casting platform year round. I fitted the front of it with a range hood and haven't looked back. There is heat and AC if needed.
Smelting is however done outdoors under a carport and both the Winter and Summer extremes hurt either my bones or breathing, so I do it in the Spring and Fall. That's where I'm headed now. Yesterday it was from 9:00 till 2:30 with about 325 lbs of soft sheet and 4" pipe smelted. Today it's 3/5gal buckets of sorted WWs. I probably won't get them all finished before my back says stop.
Being retired sure has advantages except ya have to be old to do it.
